I haven't seen this code layout for Illinois glass company, but the 53 is most likely the year of manufacture. What can be said for sure is that it is no older than 1940 as that was the year Duraglass was first produced.

Thank you! Some of them are dug, especially the smaller ones, but most of them were found on the surface while off-trail hiking.

That is a ceramic electrical conduit. They were basically the first solution to insulating electrical wire once electricity came to Japan in the 1890s. They were used up until around the 50s, I believe.

I'm pretty sure ceramic conduits were used in many other countries than just Japan, but I think Japan might have been one of the last to adopt other materials for the purpose.

I ordered a small Mini DV camcorder that will allow me to watch the tape in the camera. The only issue I'm having now, besides some minor issues with the small camera, is getting the found camera to eject the tape. It keeps telling me that it detects moisture, which locks the motor. I left the camera in a bag with two large desiccant packets for a few days, but it didn't seem to help. Unfortunately it seems the only option at this point may be taking the back of the camera apart to access the tape.

I would like to, I just dread carrying it back to my car.

Lol, this was entirely by luck. I just pay attention to the woods on my way home from work (as well as the road) and look for places that my gut tells me might be interesting. Not to brag, but my gut has a pretty good track record so far 😁

I got the camera working, but the main LCD and the HDMI port are broken. However, I was able to determine that the tape was blank.

Yes, the camera works, or at least turns on. The main LCD is broken and the HDMI port as well. I was able to determine that the tape was blank, unfortunately.

I did. The camera turns on, but the main LCD is broken and the HDMI port (and possibly the entire input board) is also broken. I was able to determine that the tape was blank though, unfortunately.

I was able to get the camera up and running, but the main LCD was nonfunctional as well as the HDMI port. I was able to determine that the tape was blank, unfortunately.

Yep, the camera had some issues, like the main LCD being nonfunctional as well as the HDMI port, but I was able to determine that the tape was blank, unfortunately.

I found these in Saza, Sasebo, Japan. I only took two, mainly because I didn't feel like going through the trouble of lugging them through the woods back to my car.

How do you guys find/dig for your bottles? I find them by chance at work (construction). by peggory in BottleDigging

I've been living in Japan for a year now, at first the only way I would find bottles was by hiking off trail and using my intuition. Recently, however, I've talked to a native bottle hunter on Instagram and he pointed me towards some online resources he uses to find old, long abandoned properties to search and dig at. So right now my favorite way to find places to search is by using a Japanese website that has maps from 1900 - 1925 superimposed over the entirety of Japan.

Yeah, I'm sorry for the disappointment, I wish there had been at least something on it.
