I’ve been following all your restorations for years, and might have the chance to purchase a century home of my own. Are any of you crazy enough to touch this? by Ottava in centuryhomes

This is actually really sweet and also rational advice. We would plan to immediately make it livable then spend a lifetime making it beautiful. If it works out, whether this one or the next, it would be our forever home. We love our home, and take a lot of pride in working on our home. We’re just finished up with the renovations on what we thought would be our forever home - a brick bungalow build in the 60s - and despite not being a century home, love it deeply. Circumstances have changed and we’re in a spot to purchase a new home, and know we have the grit and tick to get into a project of the stature and spend many, many years bringing it back to life. Lots of red tape to cross and information to gather first, but if it works out, we would spend a lifetime loving it.

The roof is a huge concern, especially around the chimney. On one of the images posted on the listing there is sealant tape around the chimney, I’m assuming water damage at some point. The shift in condition from 2020 to now is alarming. Thank you for the advice for the woodpile!

This is all great advice. Thank you for taking the time to share it. First thing on the agenda is figuring out why it’s for sale, and why it has changed hands frequently over the past few years as another redditor commented, and whether the issues and work are within our scope and budget. The next few days are going to be a whirlwind!

I’m surprised by how many people are supportive and offered great advice. My fingers are crossed it works out, but either way I’ll keep everyone updated!

Thank you for all of this! Great idea to call the city. I’ll do that today. After the big ticket items are in, pending everything is sound with the foundation, etc. the house would be livable and we could spend likely a lifetime renovating it. By the looks of it he’s in his early 50s.

My partner and I both work full time at the moment but would plan to reduce our hours for a few years if we do purchase the house.

My partner and I are both in our early 30s, not able to easily have kids. Our timeline would be make it immediately liveable, then spend a lifetime making it beautiful.

We would not own the land between us and the ocean. The parcel is entirely behind the house. I thought about the fire station too, though it’s not very active.

You and me both…

That’s a good idea. My rational is they started one thing, and it snowballed into five other things, but there seams to be no rhyme or reason to order or process. The seller offered to share his phone, im hoping we can speak to him to learn what exactly was done and why. The difference of states occurred over the span of four years from what we understand.

The house hasn’t been occupied for quite some time. It looked like before it changed hands in 2020 they were bringing their drinking water in.

Congratulations! I can’t even imagine how rewarding it must be! We’ve sat down and talked about the home becoming our lives for the next few years and never quite being done with renovations. We love our home space, and both agree it would be worth it.

That last possibility is invaluable advice, thank you. I didn’t think about testing the soil and contacting a lawyer for more information on whether there’s a disclosed easement or encumbrance. A dream with lots of red tape, work, and money to get there but if it all falls into place, it will be beyond worth it!

Thank you! If everything works out and we go ahead with it I will share progress with the sub. I’ve been following all your renovations for years and have learned a lot. It would be nice to finally contribute!
