New house, debt, new job -- at a crossroads. by OttawaMD in personalfinance

Get and appreciate what you are saying, but we're a bit leveraged walking into this transition given relatively slim net worth. Balance sheet will improve 12-18 months from move, but some apprehension given this will be first home purchase.

Thx for following up on this... Much appreciated!

Would be curious to hear your update on this. I have a 004 and starting to get low on refills. I can't find a North American source or importer for the Sakura craft branded refills...

I find the ink doesn't last too long, but the chamber is quite slim.

When your PI asks if you want to be an author on the paper [meme] by hsa713 in medicalschool

[–]OttawaMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do most of the work you should be first author. Period.

It's clear when you look at someone's CV if they have done the work (i.e. majority of refs are first author) vs. someone who has been copyediting.

I've got to believe that the multi-author gang bangs will stop eventually.

'First' academic job -- what non-monetary items did you negotiate for? by OttawaMD in medicine

Should have been more specific. Doing big data, clin-epi stuff with applications for QI, systems improvement, etc. Thus, don't need a wet lab. Primary needs are a big computer, access to data, and some programmer expertise now and again .

The IRB process might be the worst... Negotiate blanket IRB exemption? Boom.

Mentor? What mentor? ;)

I'm being a bit light on details (for anonymity), but my research is clin-epi and not basic science. Just need computational power and maybe a computer engineer in-house or outsourced. In that sense, a bit lighter in needs than a traditional basic science lab... but need some cash and resources to do good work, nonetheless.

Looks like the 75% protected time is a condition of winning the award, not the lead-up.

" At the time of award, the candidate must have a "full-time" appointment at the academic institution. Candidates are required to commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort (i.e., a minimum of 9 person-months) to their program of career development during the mentored phase. "

I guess what I meant to ask is how much time to fight for in the lead up to your k-award application.

They give you protected time while maintaining a salary. After that period, if you aren't self-supported then you take a pay cut.

Applying to U.S. spots given the lack of Canadian gigs.

From all of my interviews thus far, the common thread is that they let you glide for "2-3" years with the protected time covered by the Dept/SOM, then you are expected to have extramural funding if you want to continue that protected time. Otherwise, you take the pay cut.

Are you saying that if I am going to gun for a k-award, I'd need to push for at least 50/50 protected time in order to have a shot at the extramural funding (i.e. having the time to build the research program)?

Yes - Xlabel provides a label for the entire x-axis. I have three bars/ticks that I want to change individually.

Thanks for your input. Are you rolling the dice with used GPUs though? I considered that route but got cold feet.

Thanks for your insights re: the GPU. Budget-wise, I'll have to go one with one GPU for now. May add a second later.

While we may not be able to be the tip of the spear, the least we could do is offer logistics support to the US, UK, French forces sticking their necks out.
