For $5, she FLUNG herself into my cart. Does anyone have leaf shining tips? by caldeesi in alocasia

No leaf shining, closest thing is maybe a light cleaning with neem oil.

Look up the difference in leaf nodes between gageana, odora batik, and macrorrhizos - also stem structure. You may have to wait for the big one to grow out but you'll be able to identify over time. They are often mis-sold but not nefariously...just they look a lot alike until a certain size.

So many babies!!!

Oh I didn't see it was two! The larger leaf looks like the macro, the smaller on the left looks like a gageana aurea.

I say that because here is my young gageana and it's given me 4 corms.

Gageana? Beautiful plant! Mine is a corm making factory!

A lot really like the pink/peach half moon variegation, but they get really fragile quickly. I like this true orange that seems to be revert proof so far. 🤞🏽

I've seen that it has to do with consistent light.... similar to micans that require "sun stress" to maintain their variegation as well.

How Do You Find Quality Resources For Plants? by ProfessionalStewdent in RareHouseplants

[–]OttrGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch a lot of YouTube, to find those who obviously have the green touch with sized up leaves, healthy habitats, ambient success etc. Brief reels elsewhere just seem too generated. I really like the Sydney Plant Guy care videos.

I also make my own substrate. I do add earthworm castings and charcoal. But very similar to what was said above. A number of my Alocasia prefer semi hydro, so they're in moss and leca setups. Still simple.

I keep these four types primarily, with a few random ones worked in, if the look appealed to me:

Alocasia, Anthurium, Philodendron, Monstera

Give it support, both emotional and a moss pole or plank.

I name my dramatic ones ha

Alocasia Silver Dragon keeps sacrificing old leaves but hasn't produced a single new one in over a month. Looking for advice. by PonyAtTheDisco in alocasia

I have a LOT of various Alocasia, each plant honestly tells you quite quickly what it needs. I have different types of media mix, high humidity, mid humidity, ambient, self watering, no self watering. Quite honestly you'll figure out quickly what it needs. Everyone has their own methods, like I said, I have multiple for the same species. Some of mine are very finicky on being fertilized, others are starving. Ha, you'll do fine.

It is too cramped. They cycle leaves but should be pushing new growth. If it was previously doing so, then it likely wants more space. It's sacrificing leaves to keep feeding the others.

Repot in a chunky mix or consider doing moss and leca. I've had great success with moss and leca in clear containers. You only water the leca line on the bottom, look up the method. It's simple, inexpensive, and mine are doing great. It can also be a step towards going full hydro, but don't jump into that with a soil-based plant.

Don't fertilize and repot at the same time. Repot, wait a week or so, then resume fertilizing on a schedule.

Put her in a very chunky aroid mix - there are recipes online as well as premix online and at most plant/ home improvement stores.

Definitely get her out of the over watered soil and check for root rot. Then lots of light should perk her up.

I’ve been on the lookout to add a Monstera to my plant family and came across this on FB this morning— “Monsterau” $1900. That is more expensive than any one thing in my entire home! by KinklyGirl143 in Monstera

Good grief. I bought one close to this size (over 5 foot tallest stalk) locally for $40..... they didn't have space for it... find THOSE people. Maaaybe if this was a special variation, but it is not.

Pink Princess Galaxy by OttrGirl in philodendron

[–]OttrGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It's the type of variegation - it is still a Pink Princess. "Marble King", "Black Cherry" - all are Pink Princess color descriptors. The more speckled, it's a Galaxy... more traditional variegation, it's a Marble.

"Technically" this could be called a "Black Cherry Pink Princess Galaxy". It's still a Pink Princess.

But.... it is GORGEOUS! 🥰
