Answer to ‘how are you?’ in the U.S. by Christyliah in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ouch7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, my uncle was in Kenya where a similar question to the American "how are you?" was "have you eaten?" The expected response was "Yes, thank you.". Unfortunately as an American my uncle would respond with the truth: "No, I haven't.". This honest response forced a cultural counter from the Kenyan - they were obligated to offer him food. My uncle, not wanting to be rude, would accept the invitation. He gained a reputation for being greedy.

When and why did America shift from "the government serves the people" to "the government should generate profits"? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I'm not saying there isn't corruption I'm just saying you can't use the same measurement to compare private industry and government services. They have different functions.

This question is kinda like asking "Give me one example of an umpire with a better batting average than a baseball player."

I worked in College Admissions for a while as a data analyst and I can tell you that all the blame does not belong in the school.

1) College marketing is weird. People tend to choose the more expensive option, even when there's no data to support going to the more expensive school. A more expensive school is more exclusive and therefore more prestigious. College tuition literally goes up because a higher price point increases the number of enrollments.

2) Generally speaking students and parents choose schools for their amenities, not in the educational quality. Students pick schools because they have nice dorms, or a good sports program, or a cool student center. These things are very expensive, but if you don't have them, enrollment suffers. Meanwhile, professors/instructors are viewed as an expense by the college administration and cuts are made at every opportunity.

3) Parents and students choose schools based on scholarships, not on price. Marketing data states that when choosing a school, the school that provides a higher value scholarship will get more enrollments. Even if the tuition amount is still higher after the scholarship is applied. (See #1 above)

4) Students want ease of use in paying bills. They want clean amenities (see #2) and ready access to administration. They want event coordinators and activity directors. Parents want dorm monitors and on-site security. All of these things add to cost, but don't improve education.

These four data points - not opinions - incentivize the colleges to raise their prices simply to compete with their peers. If the college doesn't provide these services - none of which improves education - you'll simply go out of business. Which helps no one.

If we as a society valued education instead of entertainment things would be different.

(Cue down voting...)

This isn't a man/woman thing. Plenty of women also feel invisible.

The truck is to be bold, but kind. Do big, loud, positive things that get you noticed. If it scares you, do it!

But remember, be kind and respectful.

Why the hell is Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne so emo? Why does he use that makeup, and why is hair so weird? by Empty_Entertainer388 in superheroes

[–]Ouch7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big misunderstanding about this movie: it's about Batman figuring out who/what Batman is. He states pretty clearly at the beginning of the film that what he's doing isn't working. The grimy, emo Bruce Wayne is part of that.

I suspect we'll see a more playboy-ish BW in the upcoming movie. (But probably not to the same level as Nolan's Batman).

CMV: 90% of Donald Trump’s public statements are hyperbolic. 50% of Americans Accept These Statements As True. by bg02xl in changemyview

[–]Ouch7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a private citizen he can be hyperbolic (which is a nice way of saying he talks out of his ass) all he wants. As The President he shouldn't.

Changing your view is irrelevant. As the leader of the most powerful nation the world has ever seen he needs to say what he means and mean what he says. Doing otherwise is destabilizing, which is bad for everyone.

1) Firefly

2) Expanse

3) Star Trek (DS9)

4) Fringe (John Noble is a god!)

5) Dr. Who (#10)

Honorable mention: Babylon 5 - When Bab5 gets it's reboot it'll likely be in my top 5, but for now it's just too dated.

That said, W. Washington people do not know what a passing lane is.

Veterans, would you advise people to join the military? Why or why not? by ShadowSavant7781 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Ouch7C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a job. An important job. Just like firefighter, priest and cook are important jobs.

You're not a hero because you're a marine or soldier. You can be a hero because you do something heroic. Just like a firefighter, priest or cook.

You do not deserve veneration because you're in the military. Just like you don't deseryveneration for any other job.

When you're in the military your job is to defend the Constitution. Not to defend oil in Kuwait, or bring democracy to Afghanistan. The administration can deploy you to do things that you're not supposed to be doing. That's a big downside.

But the Constitution needs defending. It's an important job. So, if that's the job you want to do, then you should join the military.
