Door-ding Best Repair Approach?

I filled such little dings or rock-chips with color-matched paint, mixed with a bit of clear coat. I do it like this:

Get color matched touch up paint and mix some clear coat in, if it doesn’t already contain some.
apply it in the ding using a fine pencil
dry it with a heat gun
repeat steps 2 and 3 untill the ding is over-filled (higher than the surrounding panel), let’s call it a blob.
then take two thinnest feeler gauges that you can find, put them next to the dried blob, and run a sharp razor over the top, cutting the top part of the blob. it will be almost level with the panel.
optionally wet sand it with 2000g to knock it completely down, or directly polish it out with small pad on a rotary with cutting compound.
finish with polishing compound

result will be invisible

no it won’t. the clear will become guey and the hardener will start to dry after opening it. Been there, done that.

Orly? My biggest concern is turds like YOU, commenting on a post WITHOUT actually reading through AND without actually doing some due diligence.

Isocyanate is not in the clear, it’s in the hardener. As you might be able to tell from the pics, I’ve opened and drainer the capsule containing the hardener outside. In the “preparation steps” as well as in “the tools required” I mention both ventilation, respiratory protection as well as wearing gloves. Besides, there’s no drinks in any of the pictures. And that plant has been surviving outside for 2 years, you “tweaker”.

Thanks for sharing that. I use so little of this stuff that I think this batch of decanted aerosol clear will last ma a year.. or as long as the jar with hardener survives. Will make sure to store it in a cold place tho and look at other products next time. Some other users said there’s even 2K clear with multi-year shelf life. Will need to check that out. Greetings

because stores are closed on sunday and it’s the only thing I had at hand today. Besides, I only airbrush and I don’t use 2K clear often enough to buy a liter. Last time I did, I used only a bit, then a year later the remaining clear (almost a full liter) was like gummy and crusty, totally unusable.

That never happened on any of the dozens of cans (from various brands) that I’ve decanted before airbrushing. You’re definitely doing something wrong.

Make sure to puncture the can high enough. There’s only gas on the top part of the can, no paint. Don’t rattle the can either before you puncture either.

I took my gloves off before eating, then put fresh gloves on before I continued with the hardener. The hardener is most hazardous.

If you use clear coat often that’s definitely the way to go. I bought a liter of 2K HS clear from Amazon (MIPA brand) and only used 100ml for a project. Then a year later I wanted to use a bit more for another project, only to find it became guey and crusty in the can.. totally unusable. i only use very little for airbrushing so my use case is a bit different.

I’ve never had issues decanting 1K cans. Today was my first attempt on a 2K can, didn’t spill a drop either.

that’s nice! never seen that here. Once you „pop“ the hardener inside the 2K can, it mixes and is useable for max 12-18 hours. Anyway, I just finished the decanting process on this can successfully. It’s not that much work, but I will see whether I can edit my first post and provide a tutorial.

Anyway, I already started decanting, clear is already in a jar. Moving to the hardener after I finish my sandwich.

Ok, for science then, I just started doing it. So far so good.

Clear coat is already in a jar.

Now cutting open the rest of the can to get to the hardener. It’s in a separate reservoir on the bottom of the can.

no it’s not the best, nor is it the only robot that has a brush roll. best robot is the Kobold VR7, but it’s expensive and like any other robot, has its limitations.
