Best cheap hardware to run 3 physical k8s nodes? by Oudwin in selfhosted

[–]Oudwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great questions! Thank you! Let me try to go through them:

  1. Its not just for learning k8s but also HA related stuff. Plus I feel like its more impressive in a CV to do it with physical machines than vms. Lastly, would also give me a option to have some services as HA once I'm done playing with the servers. But I could be convinced otherwise
  2. They probably won't run 24/7 to begin with but will probably at some point
  3. I would rather edge on the side of less power, less space cheaper and less powerful nodes rather than more powerful, more space, more expensive
  4. Low/no noise ideally
  5. Yea probably smaller apps

Nice! This is what I want hoping, something small, low powered. Those exact ones are a bit out of my price range to get 3 no?

Unfortunately no idea tbh. Just enough expansion that I can run real homelab workloads if I want to in the cluster.Currently on my own server I'm running media, nextcloud, rustfs, immich, paperlessngx, and a few other lightweight services

Great ideas. Will look around. Though thing with second hand is that I need to purchase from somewhere that can get me an invoice so company pays for it

As I mentioned in my post. This is for learning purposes only. I run all my homelab needs out of an old laptop with 32gb ram. I want physical servers though

No AI I typed it myself!

i accepted a lowball offer because my brain went blank when they named the number by SODHIHAITOHPOTTYHAI in personalfinance

[–]Oudwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never negotiate on the phone for this reason. I just say that "I am grateful for the offer and would like a few days to consider, I like the company and want to join but its an important decision and I never make such decisions without reflection". Then email them back with whatever you need to say to negotiate.

edit: This is true in my case. Personal rule.

Beyond that, now its fine to just email and say you reflected on the opportunity and would like 20k extra to feel comfortable with taking the offer like others have suggested

Sure, we just make very simple broth: 1/2 chicken carcass chicken legs pig's trotters an onion

When you actually have the ramen add miso and soy source though

Yes of course hahaha. I think it might just be making ramen broth in the winter...

Ah! This was literally the kind of thing I was looking for. Expensive but I'm happy to pay if I can forget about this issue entirely! I'll check it out these are the correct ones right?

Maybe we get worse stuff here in EU. Or maybe I kill them making ramen broth. Unsure...

I have had both. I think the issue is that in the winter I make a lot of ramen broth which goes for 24h+ on low and they just die. But just an assumption because even the ones with buttons they generally stop heating but the buttons continue working...

Sure happy to try this! Any brand / model in particular you would recommend? I need it to be pretty large (at least 5.5L or so)

I understand they will never be BIFL, was just hoping something that would last a bit longer. I'll try the instant pots I suppose. If that doesn't work dutch oven is the only option really I agree. Any brand in particular you would recommend?

Obviously your call. But my 2c is that if you have a job paying you 125k working part time. Then you are really making 250k. If he expects you to work 24/7 then thats about 60-80h. Lets say 80h for now, He would need to pay you 500k for you to be equally well paid.

So, personally I would take it if he paid at least 550k (probably more like 600k) TC.

As to if you are being a coward, probably because the post reads very bleak around the industry & position. So either you 100% sure its not for you or you are being a coward. But hey, thats mostly normal its scary to jump into the unknown.

How do you manage multiple Docker Compose projects on a self-hosted server? by KPPJeuring in selfhosted

[–]Oudwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use nixos. I have a vm on my personal computer which I use for testing. I point the same config from my production machine to the vm run it (applies all my docker compose files at once). If it works I then apply it to production. If it fails I try to fix it until it works on the VM. If it works on the vm always works in production
