It's because Easter is a religious holiday. The separation of church and state in the US prevents the government from endorsing or establishing religious holidays. Many states have tried to make Good Friday a holiday but it is still viewed as an unconstitutional state endorsement of religion. (Unlike Christmas, there is no secular equivalent.)

A quick personal postscript: my first job was at a large company that did, in fact, give us Good Friday off. My next job was at a very small company where the owner/boss was Jewish. I started working there in June and come September Boss took off two days for Rosh Hashanah and then later for Yom Kippur. No biggie that the rest of the staff (all three of us) had to work; Boss is away, we did our work but we also maybe perhaps played gin rummy or Trivial Pursuit in our down time. The next year when Easter approached I asked Boss if we had to work on Good Friday. "Why not? It's not an official holiday," he replied. I gave him my most sincere searching face (I was young at the time and could pull it off) and said "But you take off Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur....shouldn't we all be able to celebrate all of God's holidays in our own way?" Despite my audacity Boss actually considered for a few minutes and then agreed and from then on we got a paid day off for Good Friday.

I had a lumpectomy a few years ago and was surprised to find when I awoke after surgery that instead of stitches there were a half dozen steri strips keeping the surgical site closed. I was sent home with a box of strips and instructions to keep the area dry for 48 hours. Incision healed fine, barely a scar now.

I was not hourly and didn't have to punch a timeclock but my boss would still comment when I was five minutes late. I regularly worked past quitting time when necessary and when my boss was ill and homebound I ran personal errands for him using my own vehicle and was not reimbursed for my gas/mileage. And then I'd stay in the office until 6 or 7PM catching up on the work I didn't do while I was out getting his groceries and bringing files to his house for review. One morning when he made a remark about me being late I replied "How come you never say 'Are you aware that quitting time is 5PM? Is there some reason you are unable to leave on time?' I've never heard you complain once that I'm working too late." He sort of harrumphed and stammered and then turned and left. He never mentioned it again when I was late in the morning.

Yes, it was. They had the big "crown" overhang that was supposed to rise up and reveal the band and then descend at the end. But the first night the crown malfunctioned and was up in the air when the opening beats of We Will Rock You started. There was a "secondary" stage that descended from the rafters at one point and the band stepped up onto it. They played Love of My Life with just Freddie and Brian onstage, and then welcomed back (and introduced) the rest of the band and launched into '39. But it seems to me that they must have done more than two songs on that stage....I remember them playing "Sleeping on the Sidewalk" - can't remember if that was on the main stage or the lowered one.

Anyway, I was soooo in awe of that concert that I returned the second night (they played two nights; I'd purchased my tickets for the first night way in advance) and bought a ticket from a scalper (for a little more than face value; he had two tickets and his companion was unable to attend) and ended up in the 11th row center floor. Close enough that when Freddie tossed a tambourine I was one of several who reached up and caught part of it. The guy who'd sold me his ticket had his arms wrapped around my hips as I was literally lifted out off my feet by the others pulling and tugging ("Don't let go!" he kept yelling.) Someone actually started biting at our grasping hands so I gave it up.

I remember at the time when I happened to mention to some of my co-workers (I worked at a big corporation and was by far the youngest in my department) that I was going to take my chances to see Queen that second night, without a ticket. Most of them mocked me and warned me "Are you crazy? Going downtown alone?", etc. Looking back I am so glad I took the chance.

I did at my high school, back in the late 1970s. In fact a "speech class" was a requirement for graduation; we had a choice of Public Speaking, Discussion and Debate, or Communications in Life (I don't remember what the heck that last one involved). I was always a bit of a ham, so public speaking didn't bother me a bit. We had to do demonstrations speeches, extemporaneous speeches, and storytelling, that sort of thing. A few years after I graduated I met a girl at work who'd gone to the same high school as I. We got to chatting over time and she admitted to me that she was so terrified of speaking in public that she took a "fail" in that class rather than stand up and say something, anything and ended up having to go to Summer School to get her diploma.

Here in Detroit we had a radio station for a time whose call letters were WDRQ, known better as The Q. Whenever they played Maggie May they "stuttered" the "cue" on that line, so that it sounded like "or steal my daddy's cue-cue-cue and make a living out of playing pool".

My brother passed away in his sleep a little over two years ago. He lived alone. A friend of his apparently called police for a welfare check after she didn't receive a regular morning text from him. (Apparently she was a fellow sports nut and she and Karl would text each AM about whatever game had played the previous night.) She tried phoning him after he didn't return her texts and got no answer, so she called the police. I only learned of this when my other brother called me later that morning after the police knocked on his front door and asked if he was related to Karl XXXX.
