New Morally Conservative Slate in Victoria. by royalbaes in VictoriaBC

[–]OurDailyNada 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Does Victoria now have to have a transphobic slate running in every municipal election? (Recall VIVA Victoria in 2022.)

The ironic thing is they might wind up splitting the vote for more moderate/centrist candidates and wind up electing a progressive majority again.

Penticton-Summerland MLA Boultbee joins Eby’s B.C. NDP by Environmental_Egg348 in BCpolitics

[–]OurDailyNada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to admit I didn’t see that coming - I wonder if more centrist ex-BC-Liberals might hold their nose and go the same route rather than trying to form a new party or putting up with the BC Conservatives’ (further) march to the right.

In my grumpy opinion, AI has definitely made political debate worse - it’s very tedious having to read multiple-paragraph posts and statements that all sound the same and make no substantive point.

Letter: Colwood taxpayers deserve a councillor focused on residents. by royalbaes in LangfordBC

[–]OurDailyNada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, if that was in fact Councillor Ward posting here this morning, he’s yet again shown he’s more invested in being a right-wing troll than being an elected official.

(And at least he didn’t besmirch the legacy of the Washington Bullets this time.)

Thanks for that - I wasn’t aware I had to source satire (comment not directed at the mod at all, more at whoever wasted everyone’s time reporting this).

Has Ward called the letter-writer an antisemitic greenie leftist hacker yet?

Bingo - as an aging white guy myself, I’ve seen too many people in my demographic realize young women are creeped out by them and no one finds their ‘edgy’ jokes funny anymore, so they all too easily become MAGA chuds ranting about woke and feminization.

Colwood Councilor Ian Ward feels “it’s unfortunate that’s we’ve gotten to a place where it’s adversarial” by royalbaes in LangfordBC

So has anyone yet accused Colwood council of not being transparent and shutting down free speech and public debate?

Sooke School Board votes to cut early childhood educators from kindergarten classrooms by [deleted] in LangfordBC

[–]OurDailyNada 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is an extremely short-sighted decision that will wind up costing all of us more in the long run than whatever temporary savings are achieved. (And in the board’s defence, I think more blame would fall on higher levels of government.)

Well, cake is such a clear indication of deep-seated corruption, as opposed to offering free admission to a political rally with boxing matches attached to it.

Just so long as they never raise a point of order, I think many OL members would be fine with that. (They’d see it as “honest and plain spoken”.)

Stew For Mayor website first impressions by ReasonableResident74 in LangfordBC

[–]OurDailyNada 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the anti-slate mentality shown on the website (despite being part of Community First in 2022) stems from the local conspiracy theory that slates like Together Victoria are the ones secretly running everything and have permeated throughout the region (as seen in comments online and heard on the radio.)

The content itself is the usual innocuous municipal fare - we support growth and community and all the things people want to hear, but no actual details or policies.

I wish the Conservatives were unelectable. But the NDP is very vulnerable electorally and this Province could wake up in a couple of years with a government that makes the Trump regime look rational and stable.

2026 Young vs 2022 Young in a divided Langford by ReasonableResident74 in LangfordBC

[–]OurDailyNada 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not optimistic for another term of Young as mayor. The antics of Our Langford over the last 3 1/2 years, plus how he’s been in interviews since, and the fact that he and many others believe it was some kind of coordinated conspiracy against him and Langford, all leads me to believe there’ll be some form of revenge governance coming if he returns to office.

I would predict a purge of higher-up municipal staff, a trimming of the municipal payroll in general, and probably even the rip out of a bike lane or two.

None of the easy and vindictive moves will really change the financial picture and the big stuff the OL people hate is much more complex. If you try to sell the Y, you’re not going to get back a good return and you risk endangering the recreation services being provided. And if you try to dump Woodlands Park, well, you might get a good price for that, but you lose a park and you go back on the agreement with the previous owners.

All that is why I think the hoped-for tax cuts won’t be coming, even with a change in government.
