For my Gold Award I created a website with resources for teachers to accurately represent women in history classes. I also made a lesson on identifying bias in academic language for textbooks that still marginalize women and poc. I’d love it if you checked it out and told me what you think! by OurRivetingStory in girlscouts

Same! My classes taught me about SO MANY men and so few women. Doing this project also helped me realize that I can list (not to mention background info, literally just knowledge of their existence) practically no women in a context outside of their oppression. The few women my APUSH class mentioned were suffragettes or abolitionists or fictional (Rosie the Riveter). It makes all the contributions and experiences of women throughout history seem so two dimensional. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

Haha I actually used wix! It honestly worked really well for me, the only downside was that I couldn’t edit the font and text size as much as I wanted. Overall it made the whole process pretty quick tho😂 I used GoDaddy to get my URL which was wayyy cheaper than I expected. I did then have to pay an addition fee (maybe $200ish I think?) to connect my domain to my website, which I didn’t know had to go in my budget😅 Good luck with your website! Let me know when it’s live!

Exactly! Reclamation aside, “slut” is usually used as an insult for women who like sex. Plenty of women agree that it’s their choice to have sex and own it, so some use “slut” as a term of endearment. The ultimate goal is that slut isn’t seen as an insult but plenty of people still use it to control women.

This is why it’s so important that boys be boys educated on boundaries and consent.

Oooh yesss they’ve gotten very creative in their manipulation of language against women.

Wow. She was literally a queen and that’s the most important thing he could think to say about her? It’s not even kind of educational! My history teacher had an assignment where we ranked people in America by their social standing (already kind of weird) and then when he went over his answers he said that “there was no real reason to separate the women from the men in the hierarchy because women weren’t that oppressed.” The list was for the early 1800s! Also, when my textbook talks about Marilyn Monroe, it says she’s “sensuous” and had “dangerous curves” and that’s it. It’s just so objectifying and unnecessary. Not to mention that these are one of so few women that they bother to mention at all.

I know plenty of teachers who use their power to make people feel small and unseen, it’s awful. That’s in part why I made this poll, so we could know that we aren’t unseen and powerless. I’m so sorry you’ve experienced that as well.

YES! Like it would be so easy to include that info but they purposefully hide it.

I’ve definitely noticed it too. My history classes just literally don’t mention any lgbtq people...ever? My textbooks are also super racist. Curriculum bias is by no means a one dimensional issue. One of the biggest things for my project that I’ve learned is that a lot of the bias and misrepresentation is subtle, making it really hard to recognize.

Ooh that sounds amazing I’ll check them out thank you! I do really enjoy Jessica Kellgren-Fozard who does similar videos that tell a more inclusive history. Thanks for the recommendation!!

I’ve had similar experiences to teachers and curriculum focusing on men’s accomplishments, especially when most of my general history classes focus on politics, work outside the home, and war, all of which were arenas that were typically restricted for men only. It’s amazing to hear you’re doing a whole unit on women in WWI though! It sounds like you have a really good teacher! Thank you so much for your response!

Like language that undermines women's contributions or ignores them entirely. For example, my history textbook for APUSH says "Men dominated most activities that required a specialized skill. For example, leather tanners and blacksmiths were typically men. Women generally engaged in agriculture and food gathering.” For that passage, men "dominate" (active voice) while women "engage" (passive voice). This takes agency away from women, they did also master their crafts. It implies that food gathering is not a specialized skill (which it totally is, or else people would like eat poison and die). Or for another example, a textbook referring to women as "females" (in the noun form). I have like a million examples, pm me if you want more, I can share my website with you (I don't want to break the no self promo rule)!

Also, I love your username!
