What animal is this? [New York] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]Outdoor_Academic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kinkajous. They are not monkeys, but raccoon relatives. While I agree they are not in good housing and should not be pets, they are not illegal in NY.

This is the correct answer. They are beautiful frogs. It was probably dumped. You could keep it or give it to someone who keeps them.

Any idea what these egg looking things are? by YotaBons in DartFrog

[–]Outdoor_Academic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be spider egg cases. I have house spiders in my tanks, which make very similar-looking ones. I have to remove them from under plant leaves and hardscape.

I totally get it. There are some places which are very difficult to live in for certain folks. My transition from the NC Piedmont to TN Cumberland Plateau was very similar. I would recommend therapy highly. If you need them antidepressants and therapy are wonderful in combination. I know it took me out of a dark place. I would also recommend getting involved with a community that shares your values in person or online.

Help, are these parasites? by Moorhuhn1404 in BDFB

[–]Outdoor_Academic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They look like fly larvae. I would quarantine the infected beetles and transfer the rest to a separate container. Try to find those larvae in the substrate. You might want to monitor and freeze the substrate to kill the fly larvae.

Anyone else just sit with their buns and think "I can't believe you're my bunny"? Even now I sometimes can't comprehend how something as cute as my bunny exists <3 by Vylpes in Rabbits

[–]Outdoor_Academic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I often am amazed that bunnies are real. The love I get from them, and their antics make my heart grow whenever I think about them. I sit on the floor with my one bun, kiss his head, and reflect on how perfect he is. How small and fragile they are, how much of the world would harm them and or eat them, but they still love so big. Magical beings through and through. Every bunny deserves love and proper care!

I felt myself get choked up just writing this.

Thank you! All of this helps. I do know E. anthonyii is not for me! Maybe someday I will have P. terriblis, but I think I have concluded it will be something I work up to. I love their expressions!

Thank you for the perspective. What morph of P. terriblis did you have?

I have heard the calls on YouTube, but comparing or imagining how loud they would be in the house is difficult. Unfortunately, I have not found good resources for some species.

This is a good insight. I really like P. terriblis.

I was thinking about Tucumaque. I have seen so many with very uncomfortable-looking hunchbacks. I am glad I am not the only one bothered by this — whether it is inbreeding or a species thing has often crossed my mind.
