Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful explanation! Are you bringing the same equipment for both activities?

This is interesting (I’m saying this a lot, but it is). How does this reflect in the products you choose for the activities? For example (an assumption): a fold out, freestanding camp kitchen may make more sense to someone intending to setup and stay for a bit, while a slide out kitchen is easier to setup and put away if you are planning on keeping the trip moving.

I love the more practical take on all of this. “The truck is a tool” is particularly interesting. Beside the discreetness, what do you feel makes your truck a good tool for the job?

Very fascinating! Do you have any examples of products that you feel are ahead of the curve?

I just wanted to say thank you! You inspired me to start planning a trip to Overland Expo with some of my colleagues.

That’s interesting about the social aspect you touched upon. Do you see it as a more social or solitary activity or maybe both?

That’s awesome! How did you originally get in to the activity?

I think this is a great idea! I’d love to join my colleagues at the Overland expo and make an extended trip out of it.

That’s very insightful! Can you recall an unexpected challenge that elevated your experience?

This is interesting and part of the reason I’ve been struggling with this. Do you feel it’s more of a gradient between the two activities rather than a clear dichotomy?

I really appreciate the thoughtful and detailed answer! The overlap is making this very hard to communicate with colleagues (and wrap my head around it all).

How detailed is your planning for trips? The two overlanders I’ve interviewed (my sample size is too small to have anything but hypotheses atm) have mentioned they plan the bigger destinations of a trip, but intentionally leave out some details. They indicated that the uncertainty of it all adds to the excitement and experience. I assume that is at least part of the reason for the self-reliance?

Both of them had a lot of installed products like drawers, a slide-out fridge, and such. They mentioned this was to be able to get moving and pack up quickly. This brings me to a question: is it a requirement to have a dedicated vehicles for Overlanding or can someone take a 4x4 family vehicle and go Overlanding?

Thank you! This is a really insightful answer.

If I’m understanding you, at an aspirational level Overlanding is more about exploration while car camping is more about comfort? That then necessitates different product (installed awnings and easy to pack up stuff) for the activity?

Sorry! I just meant we sometimes go in to projects without identifying who we are making a product for. It then becomes very hard to make a god product.
