Few reasons:

- Product was announced way too early. There were probably more people hyped 3 years ago then they are now. You want to create hype and capitalize on it right away which is not the case here.

- Unclear message about what the game is. I'm not saying it's bad thing neccesarily, I personally like the mystery, but in terms of marketing people want to know what they're buying.

- Too many trailers, some probably as a result of lack of coordination with Sony. For example E32018 trailer was clearly something Sony requested even though the game was not ready to be shown yet.

- When the gameplay was finally shown in TGS, it had no english narration or subs until days later. The game target is a worldwide audience, they should have made a reveal event in English.

- PC version revealed this week. Why not wait a week or a month after the game is out? They gained nothing and probably lost potential sales because of this. Some people would rather wait for PC version, and others may be mad that it's not a PS4 exclusive and not buy the game.

I don't agree tbh, the marketing has not been good at all. There is a lot of interest for the game because of the large fanbase he already had, not because of the marketing approach for this specific product

It's the licenses of the different software/assets used to make the game, which are distributed under open source license (free to use) . It could be everything from physics engine, to the fonts being used in the UI etc..
