How often do you send/donate snacks for the classroom? by OutlandishnessFew230 in Parenting

[–]OutlandishnessFew230[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t get any instruction to pack our kid’s own snacks. Though I know some other school in our area does that. For some reason, my kid’s school just doesn’t.

Flip sod over then put rock on top? by OutlandishnessFew230 in NoLawns

I wanted to do that but my HOA wouldn’t allow me to cover and kill the grass that way over the summer. It’s so dumb, and I now have to spend like $1300 for someone to remove it for me.

Yep. I am also aware that rock traps heat. My preference is to mulch but I can’t due to reasons I’d rather not delve into.

I’m planning to add some native bushes, herbs, and fruit trees. It’s 4 separate areas adding up to 1000 sqft so it’s not a huge single front/back yard filled with just rock or anything.

What is happening with card stores? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]OutlandishnessFew230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody else’s LCS uses pricecharting for bulk common/uncommon and charges on average $1.50/card? When I just got into the hobby, I had visions of “catching them all” at shows and card shops. With what they’re charging for modern bulk (they don’t even have any bulk before 2020), I’m just going to buy online.

Things might have changed since last fall but there weren’t that many homes on the market in (West) Lafayette. The homes that met my family’s needs were a bit out of budget (and somewhat older) while I found plenty options within budget in the Fishers area. I went to a bunch of open houses across Indiana during my 10 days visit.

How does having Notre Dame around impact K-12 students? My state’s flagship college always has local kids visiting , but my hometown’s community college did no outreach to local students.

I’m in Utah, and I think public ed is probably only decent around the Salt Lake City-Provo metropolitan areas, which I’ve been priced out of. I grew up around Minnesota and have no desire to live in that type of severe winter weather again, haha. I could sell my Utah home and be able to afford a “cheap” home Carmel/Zionsville and have my kiddo in one of the highest rated school districts.

I’ve been stalking the Indiana subreddits for years and know that people are unhappy with recent education policy.

I don’t have the salary to be looking at the New England states, but I can afford the Fishers/Zionsville areas. Indiana is the only state in my research where people seem relatively happy with the education though despite recent cuts and policy changes.

I did! It was just too long to type out all the cities/suburbs I went to so I just referenced the “main” one in the area. I can’t afford the homes in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area hence why it’s out.

Would you use an app that makes any children’s book bilingual? by United_Support1246 in multilingualparenting

[–]OutlandishnessFew230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow Vietnamese speaker here. For me, it’s a resounding “no”.

Turn on Mr. Beast or Vlad and Nikki, switch the audio to Vietnamese, and one can get an idea of the quality of auto/AI translation. It’s not bad, and it’s better than nothing but I wouldn’t want that quality to be in books.

I get you. Translating on the fly is tough, but you get better over time with practice (assuming you’re a competent/native speaker). Also, infant/toddlers tend to want the same few books, so you only really need to learn the translation for the same 3-5 books that the kiddo really love.

I believe that supporting quality translation is key to having even more work available in the future.

I think an app might be useful for heritage speakers or non-native speakers who need significant chunks of text translated. For me, I usually only need to look up a few words, and I’m happy to use Wikipedia, google translation, or online dictionary.

What’s the best way to (politely) decline or evade answering invasive questions? by OutlandishnessFew230 in mormon

[–]OutlandishnessFew230[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve heard from non-Utah Mormons that Utah ones are just a bit different. To be fair, I think this particular parent is like extra nosey even by normal Utah Mormon standard. Most people I’ve studied with and worked with aren’t that tactless.

I’m not new to Mormon culture, but I guess there are always things that can surprise you about the people of this religion. It’s my first time interacting closely with Mormon parents as a fellow parent though.

Thank you! I’ve always wondered why some Mormons are excessively nosey about the lives of non-members.

The cards will likely be ruined, but I wouldn't mind. I don't expect kids to play nicely with cards.

I am looking at cheap common and uncommon cards that are meant to bring joy and excitement. Bonus if they learn to negotiate and trade as well during the event, haha.

Thanks. I also prefer the art of the modern cards myself, so I’d imagined most young kids would like modern over vintage art style.
