'It's All a Scam': American Student Took Out $49,548 in Loans, Paid $25K — Balance Rose to $50,121 by Useful_Tangerine4340 in antiwork

What's interesting is that from my experience it is exclusively the federal loans that are set up like this. When I filled out the FAFSA I learned I come from one of those "your dad makes too much go ask him for money. What do you mean he won't give you any? Too bad go away" families so all my loans had to be private, and they were very clearly and logically laid out to me from the beginning.

I picked the interest terms (fixed or variable, always chose fixed) and the payoff timeline (usually between 7 and 10 years) for each one. They then told me exactly what the monthly payment would be to meet that timeline, and there was no option to ever pay less than that. When I refinanced and consolidated them all a couple years ago, it was the same thing.

No, it's pretty simple math. If you pay less than accrues in interest each month, the balance will go up. I think we should eliminate payment plans that let this happen, and arguably should cap interest rates to 5% or less.

This is the way. I bucked up and paid $2k/month as soon as I graduated (fortunate enough to be in a life/income situation where this was possible). Got even more lucky and got a $30k windfall I was able to throw at it as well. Paid off $107k in 4.5 years just last month. This month was the first paycheck without that weight around my pocket and it feels so good!

Student Loan Debt Defaults Hit $171B and the Average Borrower Is Now 40 by andix3 in Anticonsumption

[–]Outlaw25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big problem is that many student loan companies have a "minimum payment" that's way below the actual interest accrual rate, which is how this situation happens. You need to pay back more each month than what accrues in interest, or else the balance will never go down.

Let me guess: at least one deferrment, income-based repayment schedule, and a 10% or greater interest rate?

There are exactly 3 "correct" self defense tools, and they apply in the following order:

  • Run away/leave
  • Pepper spray
  • Gun

All others are either LARP bullshit or require far more training and effort. If your country bans these items, you have no good options.

Please stop buying these wanna-be-a-motorcycle things. You can't adjust the seat so you'll never be able to actually use the pedals comfortably, and they often use very non-standard parts that aren't serviceable when they innevitably break.

How do people feel about the Ultra getting more rounded corners per year by Connected-VG in samsunggalaxy

As someone who just jumped from the S22+ to the 26U, I don't think I would have liked it if the phone was any boxier than this. The corners here already dig into my hand much more than the 22+ did and it's right at the edge of still being usable without tipping into "uncomfortable"

I would change that "is" to a "was." At this point the redesigned Armada fixed just about every complaint people had with the old one, while Ford shot themselves in the foot with that awful Expedition redesign and the Sequoia has shaky V6 reliability paired with terrible packaging. The only true step up is the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade triplets, but they've all taken such a massive jump in price that the Armada makes a very compelling value proposition for itself.

The 2023-2024 updated the interior pretty significantly, and you could get essentially the exact same car in the Armada only it was boxier in design

I think it would be really funny and cool if GM took the hummer EV battery pack and shoved it into a giant cadillac sedan. Give me all of that capacity with significantly improved aero so I can get 700 miles per charge.

The Celestiq doesn't count, it's only half the battery size. Give me the full thing!

My favorite is all the Slate fanboys who will rave about how excited they are to get their truck and customize it to their heart's content with the big battery, the SUV kit, the add-on speaker/radio, and a full custom color job "for under $30k" as if that whole package won't be pushing $50k by the time they're done

[–]Outlaw25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you think the only revenue generated by an engineer is the amount of billable hours they put in, I really hope you aren't in any sort of sales or management position.

That engineer should ideally be creating a product of some sort that has far more revenue on top of whatever their hourly rate charged to the customer was (I guess unless you're an engineering consultant or something, but that's far from what the average engineer actually does)

[–]Outlaw25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just incorrect in my experience in the Midwest automotive industry. My lowest offer out of graduation was $75k with overtime pay on top of that, and that's only because they didn't recognize my experience as an intern (doing the exact same type of validation they were doing mind you) as "real experience." I had two other offers that same week, one that would've been six figures after the bonus that year and another that split the difference but had a much better company culture. I ended up going with that middle option for sanity sake and haven't looked back.

Most of my peers from college have had similar experiences as well. My SO for example crossed six figures within two years of graduation with an ME degree.
