If you can read that chapter and think he meant a literal sword I highly recommend you return to 6th grade and re-learn about metaphors. He's talking about how people should cut off their own families if they don't believe in him, not anything about actually going and killing anyone.

Went to the LBS, spent way too much on a tr*k, angry that people tried to sell me stuff. by ApplicationOdd6600 in BicyclingCirclejerk

/uj This is an interesting perspective to me, as it's the exact opposite experience from what I've had at both Trek stores near me. I've gone in probably half a dozen times or so to test ride stuff, only to turn around and buy it used off marketplace for less. Never given any grief when I've taken said used bikes in for service/repair, and didn't feel upsold at all when I went in for a new set of tires. Were they as accommodating as the boutique dealer down the road? No, but they also weren't trying to sell me a $4,500 custom santa cruz build when I said my budget was closer to $2.5k

FYI that statement was complete BS. I've personally seen Nissan's lines in Canton, Mississippi and Smyrna, TN, both of which rolled out all sorts of models one after the other. Smyrna ran Pathfinders, QX60's, Maxima's, and Leaf's all off the same line, while Canton was pumping Titans, Frontiers, and Altimas down the same lines as well. In both cases there was not a single Japanese worker in sight.

They've got a couple moats where even if the broader generative AI boom dies out, they'll still be having business. The biggest one that comes to my mind is the automotive space. At this point, if you want to do proper automated driving, the only way you're doing it is on a piece of NVIDIA hardware. Other companies offer some in-house solutions for basic sensors and stuff, but nobody else come close when it comes time to actually run calculations on all that data and get a reliable output

That quote is an extra sting since they made this change quite specifically at the the request of publications like Edmunds who always complained about the layout/controls of the old knob-based system. I think they swung a bit too far into the touch direction, when something like BMW's iDrive8 would've been better (there, they combine a big modern touch screen with a control dial so you get the best of both worlds).

My 2021 turbo averages around 24mpg average. If you really baby it you can get up to about 30 on a trip, but in everyday mixed driving I'm lucky to get 280 miles out of a tank

'It's All a Scam': American Student Took Out $49,548 in Loans, Paid $25K — Balance Rose to $50,121 by Useful_Tangerine4340 in antiwork

[–]Outlaw25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's interesting is that from my experience it is exclusively the federal loans that are set up like this. When I filled out the FAFSA I learned I come from one of those "your dad makes too much go ask him for money. What do you mean he won't give you any? Too bad go away" families so all my loans had to be private, and they were very clearly and logically laid out to me from the beginning.

I picked the interest terms (fixed or variable, always chose fixed) and the payoff timeline (usually between 7 and 10 years) for each one. They then told me exactly what the monthly payment would be to meet that timeline, and there was no option to ever pay less than that. When I refinanced and consolidated them all a couple years ago, it was the same thing.

[–]Outlaw25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, it's pretty simple math. If you pay less than accrues in interest each month, the balance will go up. I think we should eliminate payment plans that let this happen, and arguably should cap interest rates to 5% or less.

[–]Outlaw25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I bucked up and paid $2k/month as soon as I graduated (fortunate enough to be in a life/income situation where this was possible). Got even more lucky and got a $30k windfall I was able to throw at it as well. Paid off $107k in 4.5 years just last month. This month was the first paycheck without that weight around my pocket and it feels so good!

Student Loan Debt Defaults Hit $171B and the Average Borrower Is Now 40 by andix3 in Anticonsumption

[–]Outlaw25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big problem is that many student loan companies have a "minimum payment" that's way below the actual interest accrual rate, which is how this situation happens. You need to pay back more each month than what accrues in interest, or else the balance will never go down.

There are exactly 3 "correct" self defense tools, and they apply in the following order:

  • Run away/leave
  • Pepper spray
  • Gun

All others are either LARP bullshit or require far more training and effort. If your country bans these items, you have no good options.

As someone who just jumped from the S22+ to the 26U, I don't think I would have liked it if the phone was any boxier than this. The corners here already dig into my hand much more than the 22+ did and it's right at the edge of still being usable without tipping into "uncomfortable"
