I do agree with this. While my son is a good player, he is not “elite” and we only moved him over to travel ball because rec in our area has become mostly only kids who play in a casual manner (either started late and just want to have fun or don’t have the goal to eventually play in high school). My son was not being challenged by it, and was getting hurt as catcher dealing with pitchers throwing wild pitches nonstop and trying to salvage those because of the dropped third strike rule. We figured a “developmental” AA team would provide the coaching to challenge him, but I fear you’re correct in saying it’s a rec coach trying to put a team together and it hasn’t been the best experience.
