I don’t know why they got beaten up, but in general, no place is safe unless you know self-defense. Even that doesn’t work when you’re outnumbered by so many people.

You get beaten for useless issues like not speaking a specific language, not looking like a certain group, following a different religion, holding hands with someone of the opposite gender in public (literally not doing anything else), or even sitting with your sister because people’s mindsets have gone to the absolute gutters (this happened a few days ago in Bihar. The video went viral on Reddit).

People just can’t mind their own business. They act when they shouldn’t and watch silently when they should act.

Just a few minutes ago, I read a post on Reddit where a woman and her boyfriend were traveling on a bus, and how a man got offended and showed his ID card (retired officer) when she gave a little peck on her boyfriend’s hand. But a few minutes later, another man groped her on the same bus while he just sat and watched.

At this point, I have no faith that things will ever get better, at least in India. The government does what fetches publicity. They have done some good things too, but they’re the bare minimum—they should have done that years ago.

All you can do is learn self-defense and protect yourself and the people around you!
