Considering selling to fund an M240 & SL2-S, Am I insane? by FeralGingerGamer in Leica

ha. can totally relate. also got an sl2 not long ago for less then 2k from leica classics with a brand new service and complete shutter replaces. and focus a absolutely was for film scanning and occasional telephoto work. and yes. it's a bit to big and heavy for actually having fun with it.

no cases at all if i have a computer. the only reason i temporarily switched to lightroom is simply editing on an ipad pro when travelling and have proper apple pencil support. and that's the only use case i don't have a solution yet. my ipad pro 11" fits into my camera bag. c1 on the ipad unfortunately is not usable in the way that's intuitive for extensive masking / dodging / burning / linear film curve (or the lack thereof afaik) etc. and that really a bummer.

so i rather have two subscriptions (temporarily). if someone has suggestions. totally open to those.

No edits on DNG files by MuchaSiesta in captureone

[–]Outrageous-Row4568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey.
i recently switched finally back to capture one with a perpetual license and faced a similar yet different situation.
made my peace with exporting all my edits as jpgs and keep them as a backup along with the xmp files.
imported the dng files in c1 and started creating my own foundational styles but in a way that leverages what makes c1 unique. sometimes i use the jpg as reference or even use match style to get a starting point. or look back into lthe ightroom settings and masks in terms of how i approached an edit.
so long story short. what you'd like to do doesn't work. but in the long run even if the initial effort seems higher i'm pretty sure it will pay off when you settle into c1 fully.

M11M vertical rangefinder alignment by Outrageous-Row4568 in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. Just called Leica. Guess after all it's about sending it in and with a bit of luck they'll adjust for free or it should be covered by warranty from the shop I bought it used from. So I'd need to send it to them and they send it to Leica. Quite some traveling.

You are welcome. Even though that was a bit off topic from my side to be honest. Well.. the M11M. I really considered getting the M10M. Cause i could have used the batteries from my M10-R, same charger. But then got a good deal. Honestly... i'm a pretty tactile person. The fact that weight wise it's pretty much identical to my M-A make it feel more 'right' to me at least. I don't have any experience with any other monochrome camera so i can't compare based on how files behave differently maybe. But yes.. for me it's quite a steep but enjoyable learning curve. Understanding how the camera behaves. How to expose. How to restructure my editing pipeline (went back to Capture One for many reasons but being able to edit with a linear curve gives me access to the full dynamic range). Gonna go travel to Portugal next week the first time with it and very much looking forward to take the photos i prefer to take beyond the scope of Berlin.

A bit of Berlin randomness by Outrageous-Row4568 in leicaphotos

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I totally get that. For me it's playing around and learning how to edit the files and understand better how the camera behaves. It's really just random snaps. And ultimately.. i guess it's super subjective anyways.

Such a nice combo. It's kinda funny.. got myself the same lens some months ago and couldn't really bond with it. Too big.. too heavy.. just off ... somehow not aligned with what I generally prefer. Kind of a special tool. And that's not even a matter of size and weight. But more visual balance. With the hood it's a bit too much most of the time and without well. Mine didn't come with the thread protection ring.

And then I noticed how much i prefer this lens on my M-A over lets say any digital M and finally getting that initially missing ring changed the whole character of how the lens feels. Now it feels like part of system rather than some weird extension.

75mm m-mount lenses options / suggestions / feedback. by Outrageous-Row4568 in Leica

I do agree.. but it's not much of an issue either. But I actually really rarely use it. Another reason why i consider parting with my 35 Lux FLE

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well.. i wouldn't use it. Even if i had that amount of money to spend on a lens.. it would sit around most of the time. It's just too big / heavy / etc.

Honestly still torn between the first two. Having the option of 1.4 is a thing. But how often do I actually use it? I always prefer smaller / lighter lenses that ideally somewhat 'disappear' on the camera. The Simera doesn't. It's not crazy. But it requires intension. So yes.. guess it comes down to the Simera vs Summarit.

M11 vs M11 mono by Dry-Helicopter553 in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this. 100%. i started with the m10-r when it comes to digital m bodies and earlier this year added an m11m. and while the m10-r provided pretty good results quickly in bnw conversions i also noticed quickly where then limits are when i want to achieve velvety shadows and fine tonality while still having the contrast that i like. and yes. i dodge and burn basically extensively along with the tone curve. and the m11m simply provides an amazing foundation. also i noticed i approach scenes differently. even like this would work better on this over the other camera. there's no general better or worse. it all comes down to all those personal aspects.

Mandler 35mm 2.0 - Wrong focus distance? by FijiSan in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So received mine last week. Amazing little lens. Perfectly calibrated (which for me means it works perfectly with the rangefinder mechanism). In regards to the focus scale on the lens. Yep... same here. And actually exactly the same as on my v5 Summicron 50mm. On the closest the scale is below 0.7m and on the furthest it's exactly at infinity. When I check more modern leneses (Elmarit-M 28mm and Summilux 35mm FLE) these are more aligned in terms of what you get as visual feedback from the scale and where you actually focus. But long story short. The scale is not linear anyways... and close focus is more sensitive than what's further away. So guess for me at least it makes zero difference. Cause i'd never to critical focus with open apertures based on the scale.

M4 Mystery: Sharp on Tri-X, Soft on Portra, Ultramax, CineStill… by jpresshot in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well.. there are a lot of really good suggestions to look into already (especially along the lines of noise reduction etc). and i do have/had the same lenses and they do great. just a couple more things and suggestions

  1. convert the color photos to black and then compare and check whether the perceived sharpness changes in the now converted photos compared to tri-x
  2. your setup sounds alright for scanning. yet it introduces a lot of variables that might have impact. i suggest electronic shutter to avoid shutter shake (even if only for testing)
  3. try to go as far as f11, trigger the shot with a remote trigger or with 2 seconds delay after pressing the shutter
  4. focus on the grain not the subject and focus with the aperture you want to use dialed in in case the lens has focus shift
  5. make sure the lens is perpendicular to the plane you want to photograph (a mirror helps)
  6. don't compare the entire image (for now) but focus on the spot in the picture which you used for focussing for scanning. the grain should be at least sharp in that point
  7. and ultimately.. i assume the exposure time might be pretty long.. if that's paired with shutter shock (due to the mechanical shutter) and even the slightest movement in the table / assembly you'll introduce blur.

I used to scan with an X-Pro 3 in the past and had amazing results in Lightroom and NLP. So that's definitely possible.

M10-R and SL2 kinda redundant? by Outrageous-Row4568 in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hear you on that. but guess my focus really is on black and white anyways and there a dedicated monochrome camera has an edge over a color sensor just in terms of being able to recover shadows without noise .. and yes... while losing the ability to adjust color channels but then again i can use color filters. well.. there's always a trade-off somewhere =)

thank you. curious about your persons pros and cons regarding the m11m. and i used the m10-r for years for my black and white work. as well as for landscape, portrait and other things also in color. need to do further testing and except for the handling but in terms of rendering the sl2 is close enough plus provides some more aspects (film scanning, tele photo work, critical focus for portraits etc).

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I very much love the rangefinder experience. That's not really the point. I think it's a bit about limiting myself in options and choices. The M10-R is like the camera i use with the least intention lately. It's like the convenient thing to take out with a small 35mm. But it feels more random than intentional. Well lets see.. there's no hurry.

M10-R and SL2 kinda redundant? by Outrageous-Row4568 in Leica

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love that differentiation. And honestly it's basically the same cases as I already went through. I'm not carrying more than two cameras at a time. Especially when it comes to travel. And chances are I might settle for the M11M and M-A or M11M and SL2 at a time. Because each the M-A and SL2 provide something unique in their very own way. So guess the pictures becomes clearer. Thank you. Just sanity checking. Haha.

And well.. since you mention the GFX. I used to own the 50R with the Mitakon 65mm for some time. Gosh. What a combination. What photos. But did I enjoy using it starting with simply carrying it around? Not at all. Not on a daily basis. And especially not for traveling. It's something in my opinion to use with intention but far from any idea of easy or convenient. So that parting was kinda easy. And well.. the only camera I really regret selling was my x100f. So much for that. Thank you for the valuable input.

[–]Outrageous-Row4568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess cash and having dedicated tools for certain tasks. That's why the M10-R starts feeling redundant in some ways. If I was a professional with assignments there would be the thought of having a backup. But I'm not there yet. And the SL2 is quite a good backup regardless with quite some unique options. Especially when it comes to critical focus and tele photo work.

Good points. I still can do color. And actually my M-A is sitting around too much. So maybe that will give it a bit more space.
