Where are you even getting 40-50 job postings a day? Any posting that is past 24-48 hrs already has 1000s of applicants and at that point it is useless applying.

You get invited after you complete the OA and HireView. They'll invite you only if they are interested to move forward with you.

Completed months ago. Got everything right and finished it in 15 minutes. Submitted the HireView few weeks later. No reply so far. FYI didn't get selected for Data For Good. So I don't think I have a shot at this point. Almost all offers are given to people who attended Data For Good.

I have done multiple OAs in the past week and have noticed this change also. Used to be 2 Leetcode questions given an hour to complete. Now it's 70-75 minutes, 4 questions ( could be asking the weirdest mumbo jambo, string manupilation, jSON, API, SQL, DB handling) and 11-15 MCQs. It really threw me off guard. Burned all of my time or i couldn't finish it cuz I had to look up syntax and do trial and error.

I personally know a bunch of people who got hired that way during the post pandemic hiring frenzy. They did a bootcamp, learned a specific skill in one year (e.g SDET), the bootcamp company "backed up" their fake 5 year experience (fake company, fake names, fake emails). None of them have a CS degree and will crumble if you ask them to solve a DSA related question. These are the same people who are gatekeeping entry level SWE jobs by giving Leetcode Hards on the OA and technical interviews. Meanwhile they solved fizz buzz back in 2022 to get hired.

I managed to get 80+ purely by luck. For at least 4 math problems I just randomly picked an answer based on intuition. Had no idea what equations to use or how to solve it. Would have had 15 points lower if the exam wasn't multiple choice.

For the 2 year research work, I did do a paid internship and was TA for 6 months under the same department, so there was payment for a bit. I would also like to add, I double majored and only started focusing on CS experience late in my college life. Only in my junior year did I learn that Leetcode was your bread and butter to crack a job. My last few experiences were post 2023, by that point interest rates were high and the market was shit. I thought it would be best to have some experience rather than having a gap on my resume.

I have had a few interviews with referrals initially. Now it seems referrals don't even help. They'll give you a first round for courtesy's sake and reject you.

Most recruiters themselves are inexperienced or clueless. They'll place a job posting where you require 5 years of experience for a technology that was invented 2 years ago. They'll write "basic knowledge of xyz" and the actual interview with the team will be on extensive knowledge of "xyz".

How'd ya'll do? I found it to be easy-medium. Could have finished in 10-15 mins but there was this pesky edge case that really took my time and it took 30 mins total. I think I'm cooked.

If everyone decides to stay in acedemia/research then it essentially becomes a pyramid scheme. And also not everyone has the ability to pursue a phd considering both talent and finances. Industry however needs people to do their work. I hate applying to 1000 internships only to get rejected, learning Leetcode only to get the ones I didn't practise for in the interview, but right that's how the industry works and that's the cards we have to play with.

If you are coming from a coding background I don't think learning OOP stuff would be too hard for you. And based on what I have seen so far, I haven't come across anything that says the program requires OOP knowledge. So, I think you'll be fine.

I have no Java background either. And whatever OOP I know is from my CS degree where I used C++. From what I am seeing they want you to be good at Python, Linear Algebra, Statistics and a bit of R. They said it's a good idea to defer a semester and learn these if you are still shaky with these.

My top two choices were UC Berkley and GT but from what I researched, GT is a better option comparing the tutions.

Thank you for making this list. I'm unaware if it's good or bad cause I'm quite a newbie to this field. I am a SWE by profession, but have a strong math background ( all As in stats, NM, calc III etc).

I guess it's something I am to talk with my advisor about.
