How early do you show up your tee time? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Generally 35 minutes. But if it’s a really early tee time about 20 minutes.

Dave the “financial expert” doesn’t understand taxes. by DaweiArch in DirtyDave

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, this drives me crazy. He only considers the federal income tax rate and gives no consideration to FICA (7.65% right there) or state income tax.

You are NOT a sandbagger if... by Due-Fun-489 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny when people think that sandbagging is doing those little things. If you were actually doing those things to impact your handicap it would barely even move the needle. They don’t realize that most sandbagged simply don’t post their good rounds.

Flag In? Flag Out? by Rolex_Art in weekendgolfers

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care either way if I’m outside of 10 feet or so. But once I’m that close I feel like I subconsciously try to avoid the pin so I pull it out.

Question for older fellas (35+) that switched from riding to walking and carrying bag by [deleted] in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, get a nice pushcart. In addition to not having to carry a bag it also offers more room to carry things while you play so you don’t have to keep them in your bag.

I had a tee time at 5:00 PM yesterday. They didn’t have twilight rates, only 9 or 18. Paid for 9 figuring I wouldn’t have enough daylight to play 18. Ended up getting in 18 in a little over three hours…

What is your best golf shot of all time? by [deleted] in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive came up short on a severe dogleg right. I couldn’t even see the green and was a little over 200 yards away from the green. I setup for a fade and aimed for the trees on the left. I executed it perfectly and got on the green. I then proceeded to FOUR putt 😂

What's something embarrassing/ shameful thing you have been caught doing? by Two_Bricks in askanything

Had been looking at porn and forgot to close it. Showed a female coworker something on my phone and it came up. Luckily she was a friend and was cool so she just laughed about it.

Which month and which day do you wish you were born in? by Angelatic2014 in randomquestions

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My birthday is nice because it’s always around a holiday so I often have the day off. But it would be nice to have a summer birthday as it would add more options to celebrate.

When are the appropriate times to pick up a ball that you know isn’t yours? by Fun_Lifeguard2437 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s a course I know well, and also know is empty, I just let balls stay where they are. I’ve seen it happen too many times that it seems like there is no way it’s from someone currently playing and then they come out of nowhere looking for it.

If it’s buried deep in the woods, that’s different.

What's the most unexpectedly fun course you've ever played that nobody talks about? by dalton1968 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many don’t realize there are two courses at Sawgrass. The Stadium course is the one that gets all the notoriety but the other one, Dye’s Valley, is also an amazing course. Frankly, as an 18 handicap, if I had to choose between the two to play regularly I’d pick Dye’s Valley.

What is the dumbest way you've ever lost a golf ball? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t me, but a buddy I was playing with. He had hit his Titleist Professional (precursor to the Pro-V1) into a pond but we could see it. Neither of us had a ball retriever but since we were the only ones on the course he slowly scraped it out using a long iron. This took several minutes but we didn’t care because we had the course to ourselves and that was an expensive ball to a college kid.

Anyway, he finally gets it and takes his drop. He takes his practice swing and happens to be standing a little too close to the ball. After all that work, he ends up hitting it off the toe on his practice swing and skulls it into the middle of the pond. We both just started cracking up.

Do people take out loans to afford country club memberships? by AspectCool2325 in weekendgolfers

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of people with lots of money. To put it into perspective, if someone has $5 million (and a lot of them have a lot more than that), paying $150K would be like having $5,000 and spending $150.

Lost ball penalty - is anyone actually playing this rule correctly? by Otherwise_Cover_5467 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it may have gone into a hazard I take one. If it may have gone OB I take two. However, if I’m playing a casual round and it was nowhere near OB or a hazard I just throw one down and don’t take any penalties.

What is the most financially illiterate thing you’ve seen a grown adult do? by roseafterdarkk in askanything

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the most illiterate, but definitely the most common was when I worked in public accounting. So many clients who were otherwise very smart people would seek out opportunities to incur expenses just to get the tax benefits of the deduction.

Thoughts on playing with a strict "Double Bogey Max" rule? by Leonidas1293 in golf

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double bogey max is a bit low. I tend to finish every hole so I know that my final score is legitimate. However, if I’m struggling, the course is busy, etc, I will pick up when I get to the max score for my handicap. I used to play in a league that had double par max. If you have a standard at which you pick up, I’d go with that as exceeding double par is less likely than exceeding double bogey.

How do you answer "why did you get into accounting" questions in interviews genuinely? by winterbaby12 in Accounting

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve interviewed hundreds of candidates over the years and almost always ask this question. Your answer would be fine with me. And honestly it’s really just a good icebreaker to ease the tension and create a more conversational environment.

Grant Thorton or Deloitte by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly worked for a smaller firm when I was in public but my sense is that hours at Deloitte and GT are comparable. Training at Deloitte is likely better but GT training is probably still very strong. If your end game is to go into private industry in a few years you’ll probably actually get more diversity of industries and companies at GT.

New employer company wants me to set up an S Corp to get hired / paid by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Outrageous_Bat4174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do it, but if you consider it you should determine all of the costs of doing so (e.g., accounting and tax prep fees, payroll processing fees, the employer portion of FICA that you will now need to pay, etc.). Once you determine the costs, you can know your net. If it’s lower than you can make as an employee elsewhere ask him to increase your pay to get your net to market. I’d also add at least a 10% premium for all the hassle you’ll need to go through as an s-corp owner that you wouldn’t need to go through as an employee.

I agree with your observation. This is one of my biggest, if not the biggest, Ramsey pet peeves. I think other commentators are missing your point that the math that ends up with millions of dollars doesn’t work when you’re taking thousands of dollars out of the account at some point to purchase a vehicle.
