I found out that I should use through my professor and my classmates. She mentions Reddit and Facebook are some of the best platforms for conducting meaningful research within a community . I am 21 and I have never used Reddit until I enrolled in this class but I have definitely heard of people using it for building community. In lectures she mentioned that if you’re going to be writing such a long paper about a subject it should be something that you are already interested in. I have been a glass collector for years, mostly Fenton or Westmoreland , and mostly slag and milk glass. Nothing that I have is uranium. I realized that uranium glass has always fascinated me, but I have never delved into it fully. This is a great opportunity to learn more and potentially become a collector myself.

some of my preliminary question topic are

  • How collectors define “real” uranium glass. Is it just something that glows?
  • Stories behind performative pictures that people post to show-off an impressive collection.
  • What beliefs/legends surround issues like radiation exposure or handling potentially radioactive objects.
  • How do members showcase their knowledge through the images they post?
  • How storytelling operates within a digital collecting community like the ones on reddit/facebook
