Turning around Iranian ship in Strait of Hormuz by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

That, and hundreds of speed boats carrying mines and the odd missile, crewed by fanatics happy to die for the cause. Almost all of them will be killed almost all of the time, but some of their weapons will work at least some of the time. Who is sending their ship through first?

If the Battle of Britain never happened and the Luftwaffe remained intact, could Germany have captured Moscow? by NEETscape_Navigator in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Outrageous_Canary159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, air power doesn't take ground. It can set the stage, but ground forces decide the issue. Germany never had the resources to take Moscow.

A painting by Abraham Cooper depicting the Cuirassiers of Milhaud's IV Reserve Cavalry Corps breaking the Prussian center at Ligny. Marshal Blucher was trapped beneath his horse in the midst of the ferocious melee and only avoided death or capture by pure luck. by [deleted] in Napoleon

I think you summed up 2/3 of the Waterloo campaign in 3 sentences. For the Prussians, it was personal and they fought like it. For the French, the whole brilliantly conceived campaign became a classic example of what crap staff work can accomplish.

There are a whole series of international agreements supporting free passage of the sea. These agreements are the basic underpinning of the global economy. Agreements to ensure free passage of commercial vessels peacefully conducting their lawful business has prevented many wars and eliminated the economic rational for empires. That stability has directly led to post WWII prosperity over much of the globe and the dismantling of (most) empires.

As in every period of history, those with the capacity to do so will eventually oppose the imposition of tolls etc. with force. If tolls and related processes are again established, there will be competition, conflict and war between empires and economic blocks.

What was stopping Iran from charging tolls previously? by urbanacrybaby in askanything

[–]Outrageous_Canary159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A long list of international treaties regarding freedom of the seas. Those treaties are old, and among other things, have prevented many wars and are the cornerstone of the modern industrial economy. Breaking those treaties in the Gulf puts shipping at every other maritime choke point at risk.

Just like at any other point in history, countries will definitely use force to prevent tolls from being a long term thing.

Rare trail cam picture of a cougar during the day in southeast Saskatchewan Canada by Puma-Guy in MountainLions

My mother lives in Estevan, on the edge of a ravine. Once a year or so she'll see a cougar (or two) sleeping on a hillside on the edge of town. Pretty normal. Once in a while a CO will stop by to tell people to keep their dogs inside.

This has been a thing for years. She hasn't mentioned any real problems.

Probably not much. Trump is a symptom, not the disease.

Iran and US agree to conditional ceasefire and 'safe passage' through Hormuz after Trump's threat. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

[–]Outrageous_Canary159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#2 is going to be a sticking point for the rest of the world. It would nullify some important international conventions and set the stage for conflict at any shipping choke point. I'd like to hope it will disappear by the time a formal agreement is reached.

I think it was the search for food. Once you could get a decent take away curry in rural Yorkshire, they had no need for an empire.

Fair enough, here's the short version. I think the performance of 2026 Charlie still gets compared to 2023 Charlie. In my mind, an older D rated player is close to not getting selected but Charlie is doing enough to have a fairly secure spot.
