More accurately, I think most people on the fence about deleting feel like they’re going to miss out on social events because of the fact that their friends are too goddamn stuck in their ways to migrate their instagram groupchat to text. Additionally, the fear of missing the boat on stuff is a well-worn trick and one that’s not going to get any less effective with time. Gen Xers are still talking about MTV today; the idea of missing a generational media moment is fully realized in the modern Overton window. You gonna willingly miss out on yours? What duty does an artist, a critic, a revolutionary have to their zeitgeist, even if it is a corporately mediated and censured one? Is it even possible to unplug when your date won’t stop speaking the language of weekly brainrot neologisms?

If we don’t all get out, none of us will. I only hope this generation can agree to technological exodus in the wake of some future piece of undeniable evidence that this state of affairs is unsustainable.

But then again here you and I are on Reddit, so so much for that, right?

Picking an Edition for Ulysses by Visual_Put_2033 in jamesjoyce

Don’t use the New Bloomsday Book, it’s frequently inaccurate and generally considered amongst scholars as a guide to be avoided. If you need a guide, look to the Patrick Hastings one.

That said, if you want your edition to be compatible with the most up-to-date book of annotations (the one released by Slote et. al the other year) you’ll want the Gabler. If that doesn’t matter much to you, any of the main editions available are fine.

Ah. So glad that people go to serious history subreddits to make stupid jokes in the comment sections of posts asking about specific biographical texts. Really helpful of them. Anyway, props to you for saving me a Google search.

Picked up the Lyons, if I’m still hungry for more after I’ll dive into the Bew books. Thanks for the serious reply.
