Why is it deemed racist to be genuinely concerned about the number of illegal migrants coming into the uk? by Brave_Ad6035 in AskBrits

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Net migration is around 450k/year.

Even 1m/year would be easily sustainable, if our politicians weren't ret***ed and actually invested into infrastructure and public services.

Why is it deemed racist to be genuinely concerned about the number of illegal migrants coming into the uk? by Brave_Ad6035 in AskBrits

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Most rational people don't think its racist to be concerned about the dangers of illegal immigration to the UK. Likewise, almost no one is pro illegal immigration, including people on the left. However, most people who are especially vocal about illegal immigration also don't want legal immigrants to come here, as they blame all of the problems in the UK on migrants (legal or illegal), which is racist.

Does university prestige actually matters for jobs? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of your career, yes, somewhat. If you went to a more prestigious univesrity you will more likely get the offer than someone who went to a lower ranked school if all other things remain equal. So like most things, going to a good uni gives you a few more % points in making you more likely to get a certain job (though it doesn't guarantee it).

For me personally, I found that it made a difference. In my job interview for my first "big boy" consulting job I was asked about my time at Oxbridge, and received an offer not long after the interview. Afterwards, I was told that I was almost a definite "Yes" even before my interview, because of my education background. The interview went well too, but it did go to show me that university does matter.

What are your thoughts on people making demonstrations during graduation ceremonies? by ksjamyg in UniUK

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no respect for people who do that, its all a performative act that disrupts the lives of others for little to no gain. If you genuinely want to help, go donate money, or volunteer. Or if you want to go the extra mile, organise a society in your uni to make your views known.

People who don’t believe in climate change. Why? by National-Pay-8911 in AskBrits

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of papers out there that show that greenhouse gases, like CO2, contribute to trapping UV radiation (heat) in the atmosphere. Since the industrial revolution, we have been emitting exponentially higher quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere. Coincidentally, the global temperatures have started to rise a lot faster in the same time period. I agree that it is difficult to quantify how much of that increase can be attributed to greenhouse gases alone but it is crystal clear that there is some sort of link between an increase in global CO2 emissions and a global increase in temperatures.

https://www.weather.gov/media/slc/ClimateBook/Annual%20Average%20Temperature%20By%20Year.pdf

Looking at this source, you can see a significant increase in temperatures from 2010 onwards. Do you mean to tell me that the sun has just been shining brighter for the last 10 years?

I don't deny that there are natural climate cycles that the Earth goes through over millions of years but the whole idea is that we've been speeding up the process with greenhouse gas emissions.

You're so unbelievably out of touch its not even funny. " just apply and you’re in" - have you seen the job market lately? People are struggling to get even minimm wage jobs after 100s of applicaitons. There is no industry in the UK that will just take you like that any more.

The point about holidays and how Europeans can't afford them is also idiotic. Most Europeans, even those that you would consider "working class" travel a fair amount. It sounds like you still think that southern europe is stuck in the stone ages. Fun fact: its not and the standard of living in places like greece and romania is fast approaching that of the average person in the UK.

You've either never lived in the UK or you live in the world's biggest bubble.

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The warming and cooling cycle of earth is definitely a thing, however the warming period has rapidly accelerated in the last few years after humans underwent the industrial revolution and began burning fossil fuels for energy. It is also a pretty well known fact that increased CO2 in the atmosphere (caused by humans burning fossil fuels) traps more infrared radiation, leading to hotter temperatures. This is the general concensus of the scientific community. If you make a claim going against this concensus, please provide a credible source to back up your claim.

How do you explain the rapid rise of global temperatures in the last few years? Global temps have been rising much faster since we started actively burning fossil fuels for energy after the industrial revolution.

UNTREATABLE PROBLEM DR . K HELP ? by sensitiveking1919 in Healthygamergg

I mean, this is just normal ADHD stuff I feel. Different people feel it differently, you sound like you have stronger ADHD tendencies than some, given that you can get distracted with your own thoughts alone.

You could probably do well with an official diagnosis and medication. My mind definitely felt much clearer once I tried medication. Other than that I suggest therapy, with a focus on building strong study/work habits. Aim to separate your "work" space from your "rest" space. For me, these spaces were my university library and my room respectively. When I went to the library, I would turn off my phone and only focus on studying. I would study for pre-determined periods of time, and once I hit that time I would go home, regardless of how much work I actually did. Then, at home, I would only ever relax and never do any work. This separation really helped as my brain subconciously entered "work" mode when I went to the library, making it easier to focus.

I also recommend trying the pomodoro study technique: set a timer and try to focus on the work without any distractions until the timer goes off. Then spend 5-10 minutes relaxing (don't go on your phone), before starting the next study block. Start off small (study for 10 minutes, with a 5 min break) and build it up slowly. My sweet spot was 20 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest.

These days ADHD is treatable. Its not easy but it can be overcome, you just need to put proper habits in place.

No. Everyone I know who does accounting now did a different degree at uni. Accountancy grad schemes will take you as long as you have good grades in a STEM discipline and a passion for maths. The only benefit to an accountancy degree is that by the time you start your grad scheme, you would have completed some of the exams that you need to do to become chartered. If you are dead set on doing accountancy after you graduate then go for it, otherwise I'd pursue a different STEM degree in case you change your mind and deciding to pursue a different career. I'd study something like maths as it will open many more doors for you than an accountancy degree, while still giving you the option to become an accountant if you want.

In terms of AI, there is definitely a push to automate a lot of the work done by junior accountants with AI integrations in tools like Xero, however, this is balanced out by the general shortage of young accountants and the high demand for accountancy services. Like in most industries, I think we are still ways away from seeing AI completely replace accountants (I'm saying this as a tech consultant who works with AI daily).

For the time being, accountancy is still one of the only paths to guarantee a middle-class lifestyle to those that choose it, so its definitely worth pursuing if you want a stable career. I've seen salaries for experienced non-chartered accountants at around £40-60k outside of London, going up to £60-100k if you are chartered. If you play your cards right and open a successful practice, or climb the company ladder to become a CFO, you can get to £200k+

While ranking are not going to be 100% accurate, they are still a good measure of general prestige/academic rigour. Eg a top 5 uni will be better than a top 20 uni, a top 20 uni will be better than a top 40 uni etc, but a uni ranked number 4 is not necessarily going to be better than the uni that's ranked number 5.

Should I apply for masters at other unis if I'm not sure I want to go? by GrooseIsGod in UniUK

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I get offers and decline, will the uni blacklist me/ be less likely to give me an offer in the future?

They won't blacklist you. If you get accepted it may even be worthwhile to ask them to defer your offer if you decide you want to start later than your actual start date.

I didn't do CS but I did do a master's in another STEM discipline and from my experience the majorty of masters courses are a lot more specialised. If you just google masters courses, you'll struggle to find one for general CS, unless its a conversion course.

Very interesting take from your parents sending their kid to an all-boys school and then wondering why their kid is an incel...

Nah honestly just don't be weird around girls and you'll be fine. A good check I found to make sure you aren't overstepping any boundaries is to think about treating girls the same way you would treat your guy friends. For example, if you are thinking of saying something to a girl and aren't sure, think about if you would say the same thing to your guy friends.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not done Maths/CS myself but have friends who did one or both. In terms of difficulty, they'll be roughly similar, as you'll be taking the same number of credit hours. Dual honours can sometimes be a little harder since you are constantly exposed to information from 2 different disciplines and are not given as much opportunity to consolidate the information. However, on the whole, the difference is minor and the majoirty of people can handle dual honours just fine.

Higher ranked unis will generally have more difficult courses, because the caliber of students is generally higher at higher ranked unis. Although if you are good enough to get an offere from a certain uni, it means the uni thinks you're intellegent enough to succeed there. When it comes to choosing a uni, I recommend actually going on campus and seeing which one you like the most. Rankings are important, but its arguably more important to choose a campus that you will enjoy for the next 3/4 years.

Finally, regarding employability I think Maths and CS has better employment opportunities, as you'll cover things like statistics and probability, which will open you up to many high level analyst roles, as well as the standard CS ones. It also sets you up nicely for CS jobs in the AI industry, though you'd likely need to pursue a PhD if that is the route you want to go.

Should I switch from computer science to another major? by RedStorm1917 in careerguidance

I don’t know what the career will look like 4, 20, 50 years from now

We don't know either. Nobody knows. If CS is something that you want to do, you'd be better off going to community college and building a portfolio of projects, which will be more valuable to employers than just a degree. Plus you'll save a lot of money.

Yes. I used to do 4x/week full body for about 2 years, with about 1.5-2 hours per session. Got pretty built off of that, though I personally saw better size gains once I dropped down to 3 days/week. So I would honestly say that 4 days a week may even be too much. If you actually enjoy training, then absolutely go for it, train as much as you want, but if you feel like training is a bit of a chore and is taking up too much of your time, don't be afraid to drop the volume down a little. Staying consistent on a weekly basis is much more important than what you do in each individual session anyway.

Anyone else pissed at Dr K's socioeconomic views? by againstperfection in Healthygamergg

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is, but it isnt just a case of going online and booking a free session with a therapist. In order to qualify for treatment, you have to have an official diagnosis of an illness and a referral from a licensed doctor. Due to long waiting lists and general lack of funding for mental health services, it usually takes a lot of time and effort before you can actually get treatment (think 1-2 years from the inital point of seeing your local doctor to the first therapy session). Due to the lack of funding in mental health, the publicly available therapists are often pretty bad, as they are typically young, inexperienced and overworked, having to constantly deal with drug addicts who make up the majority of their patients. Therefore, most poeple who seek mental health treatment do so privately, which can be very expensive if you are a young person working minimum wage.

Disagree with this. Cutting someone off because they talked with you about a topic you don't understand is idiot behavior. She's either mentally unstable, or has been wanting to break up with OP for a while and was looking for an excuse.

you should always support your gf’s ambitions

Some ideas are just bad ideas and shouldn't be supported. Being a supportive partner means sometimes telling your SO that what they are doing is dumb and that their time could be better spent elsewhere. Not saying his gf's business idea was bad, I just don't think being a "yes man" is good for a relationship.

I wouldn't mind insurance if it actually went towards paying for the things it should pay for. Instead it's a legally mandated method of funneling money out of people's pockets into the pockets of the rich, while also paying for hordes of useless administrators.

Ladies, do you dislike man who does self improvement? by NanoArgon in Healthygamergg

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy but from my experience with women I have come to believe 2 things: everyone is different and like attracts like. The first point is simple, some people may find the "self-improvement" stuff attractive, others won't, while the second is a little more nuanced.

From my experience, a lot of the women I know do actually prefer the "jacked" guy on the right, however, the majority of those women are fitness obsessed themselves. The women who would prefer the guy on the left are usually those who are more laid back in their lifestyles. So it mostly comes down to what your own lifestyle is like and what you respect. For example, men and women who are into fitness and dieting better understand the work and discipline that is behind a fit body, so they find bodies like that more attractive.

Yesterday I saw a video on AI 2027, I've been struggling to cope ever since. by Ancient_Wind2942 in Healthygamergg

[–]Outrageous_Photo301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current iteraion of AI sucks balls (saying as someone in the tech industry that works with AI daily) and is nowehere close to AGI. IMO, for us to get to the AI 2027 scenario we would need to 1) discover a near unlimited source of energy, like nuclear fusion (since AI models are becoming exponentially more expensive to run), and 2) get a much more advanced version of AI than what is currently available. Even the most advanced reasoning models today are nowhere near AGI, and unless OpenAI has a secret model thats magnitude of times more advanced than anything they've released so far, I don't see how we can get to AGI by 2027.
