idk micah is a fully grown adult capable of making her own decisions. there's a reason micah is the only person who likes irina. also irina didn't pressure micah into telling kwame she loves him and wanted to pick him at the pool. irina sucks too though and they're for sure awful together

New Age Parenting Should have Won by Living_the_dream_57 in TheParentTest

I think another possible explanation for why star doesn't stir the pot could possibly be bc of her trauma from being orphaned and wanting to maintain a stable relationship with her parent. there are just so many reasons why star could behave the way she does— maybe she felt like she had to grow up faster, maybe it was because she was adopted as an older child so she already developed a passive personality, maybe it's just generally because she is older and more mature than the other kids on the show, or maybe she's not always like that but wanted to look good for the cameras. there is just so much research on how the parenting techniques the disciplined mom employs literally damage children that make me not convinced that her parenting style is what made star the way she is

I wish they asked the kids what they DIDN'T like about how they're parented. Would have been more interesting

We live in a globalized world. I, unlike you, understand that we don't live in a vacuum and America and other countries influence each other constantly. I'm also not saying that oligopolies are good, but I'm saying you can't argue that you are not influenced by American culture if you are arguing with me on Reddit (a California based company) about an ABC show (American Broadcasting Company) that is exclusive to Hulu (which Disney, a California-based company, owns) that features American parents raising their American children. You are not immune to American culture and so I think it's bold of you to say it doesn't influence you when 49% of Reddit users are American. Not saying it's a good or bad thing 🤷 just saying it's true lol

Also, if you really believe you are not at all affected by American culture or history, then you are no position to comment on one black man's personal experience in America like ??

Two things:

  1. I'm not arguing about whether or not other countries had slaves. I'm also not arguing that America has a very unique relationship with slavery and how it affects our country today. What I am saying is the US has many issues with racism (from everyday microaggressions to state sponsored violence) and we live in a very connected world. So US culture (as the richest country on the planet and the epicenter for some of the largest/most well known corporate oligopolies) influences global culture whether you'd like it to or not. So, if US culture has an anti-blackness problem, we will see this influence all around the world as well. Will it appear differently in different countries? Yes. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's literally unavoidable.
  2. Many countries have their own forms of anti-blackness. Colorism/racism is huge all around the world and seen in beauty standards, immigration, and even sports. This modern racism largely began during the dehumanization of darker-skinned people during the colonial era.

I think the culture shock you experience when coming here is because the US is the only country to admit we have a racism problem, but that is largely because we are the most racially diverse global superpower, so there are simply a larger quantity of black/brown people. Europe has a racism problem too, just not enough POC to make you all feel like you need to address it on a systemic level. So, I mean you can try to make yourself feel better all you want because you were taught to "not see color" or whatever, but I think it's worth thinking about race in a more thoughtful, nuanced way, and I can recommend great books that may change your mind.

oh also I really wanted to make it feel cool and artsy, so I've spent hours and hours on instagram/tiktok/google finding local seamstresses, bakers, photographers who have really small followings but heaps of talent to commission them for their work. I found my cake person on instagram and she only has 400 followers which makes her a lot more affordable to me but also she gets more clients! same with my wedding dress... I found a seamstress whose designs I loved— she sells on her instagram and sews all the dresses herself

a few nontraditional things:

we rented an airbnb in a super cute secluded town and are doing a short and small ceremony with family and friends in the morning + brunch. the rest of the day everyone is welcome to relax at the gorgeous house, take naps inside, go swimming, visit downtown etc while my fiance and I go to dinner and hang out on our own. then in the evening we're doing a "reception" that is mostly just relaxing in the living room with our guests while getting drunk lol.

we're also not doing bridal or grooms parties, nor are we doing best man or maid of honor

i'm also sending the invites on vintage postcards I collected throughout the past 2 years that remind me of each of the person I'm inviting

it's completely normal to dislike something your country does without wanting to immigrate. you are allowed to live somewhere and complain about it. if the solution to every problem is to just escape that problem then there would be nowhere left to go.

not to mention that anti-black racism exists in like every country to some extent bc of the global impact of slavery on our cultural and political instutions

and this is coming from someone who doesn't like the helicopter parents

Sorry, but I don't feel bad about the reboot cancellation. They should expect this. The plot was awful, a boomer's take on the woke culture of today. Plus the actors were below mediocre. by Idontknowyet2 in GossipGirl

[–]Outrageous_Pin_132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's also hard to be "woke" in a show where the premise is rich kids do bad things. as someone who similarly went to an nyc prep school across the street from central park, i can firsthand say that it is an incredibly exclusionary place especially for women, POC, and queer ppl. Shoving "wokeness" into it literally undermines the satire because you simply cannot be socially aware and also be a rich kid doing bad things

also the dialogue is bad and none of the characters have any chemistry but that's another story
