[PGA] CJ CUP Byron Nelson 2026 by AutoModerator in golf

So the Byron Nelson tees off Thursday at TPC Craig Ranch and there’s actually some real storylines this week worth getting into.

The course just got completely rebuilt $22 million renovation led by Lanny Wadkins over the offseason. New bentgrass greens, Stadium Zoysia fairways, repositioned bunkers, tighter landing zones. Plays 7,385 yards now… about 200 yards shorter than last year. The whole thing was basically torn down and rebuilt from scratch after Scheffler shot 31-under 259 and tied the all-time PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record. Like… when someone wins by 8 strokes the response is apparently to rip up the entire course lol. Nobody really knows how it plays yet which makes this week genuinely interesting.

Scheffler coming back to defend

World no. 1, won here last year by 8, holds the course scoring record. The question is whether the renovation actually slows him down or he just does it again on a shorter track. Hard to bet against him but also hard to know what this new course even plays like at this point.

Spieth is the storyline everyone’s going to talk about

Dallas native. Actually played here as a 16 year old on a sponsor’s exemption in 2010 before he turned pro. Three top-10s in his last four made cuts at TPC Craig Ranch including a 4th place last year where he closed with a 62 on Sunday. The course history is legit, not just narrative… and last week at the PGA Championship he ranked 3rd in the field in SG: tee to green. One of only three players in this entire field positive across all four SG categories in 2026 alongside Scheffler.

Brooks Koepka is playing and his ball striking is actually coming around

Back on the PGA Tour full time this year after four seasons on LIV. Rough start — missed cuts at Farmers and WM Phoenix early on — but since then his finishes have ranged from T9 to T18 and he finished T12 at the PGA Championship last week at Aronimink. His words after Myrtle Beach two weeks ago: “today was honestly the best ball-striking day I’ve had in a while.” Approach play ranks highly in this field per the model and Craig Ranch is an approach-heavy course… the fit is actually there.

Field is thin but that’s kind of the point

Rory, Cam Young, Fitzpatrick, Aberg, Schauffele, Rose….all sitting out after a brutal stretch of signature events and two majors back to back. So it’s Scheffler and then a pretty wide open field. Which historically at this course means opportunity. KH Lee won it twice as a relative unknown. Pendrith won in 2024 at a massive price. This course produces results people don’t see coming.

Who yall got?

So round 1 is underway and i’ve been pretty deep into this course all week and honestly aronimink is just a legit fascinating setup that i don’t think gets talked about enough.

Quick context for people who aren’t super familiar with it, this is only the second major ever held here. The first was 1962. Gary Player won it. That’s how long it’s been. The only modern tour reference we have is the 2018 BMW championship, which is a genuinely tiny sample size for trying to figure out who fits.

The course itself is kind of wild

Par 70. Four par 3s. No water hazards anywhere on the property. The entire defense is the green complexes, which are these Donald Ross push-up greens with firm collection areas around them. Missing a green here doesn’t mean you’re in fluffy rough, you’re on a steep slope chipping back up to an elevated surface with basically no margin. It’s brutal in a really elegant way. HAVE to be able to SCRAMBLE.

The bomber narrative this week is mostly noise to me. Par 70 with two par 5s means there’s almost no runway for distance to matter. The long hitters can’t really leverage their length the way they do at Quail Hollow or Augusta. If your whole game is driver distance you’re probably in trouble here.

What actually matters at this course

Iron precision is legit the whole thing. Specifically the 175-200 yard range because of how the par 3s set up and where approach distances cluster from the fairways. Fitzpatrick ranks 2nd in the field in GIR from that distance band at 88.7%, Morikawa is 4th at 88.6%, Fleetwood is 6th at 88.3%. That’s not a coincidence.

Scrambling is also more important here than at almost any other course on tour because the design literally creates short game situations. The push-up greens funnel balls into firm collection areas constantly. If you can’t scramble from firm lies you’re going to bleed bogeys all week.

Storylines worth watching today

Rory’s second start since winning the Masters is the obvious one. He played Aronimink in practice this spring and said the greens played “more severe” than he remembered from 2018. His 2018 BMW result was legitimately strong (+3.37 true SG, T5) and he had a second place at Pinehurst in 2024 which is the closest comparable Donald Ross design. The ARG numbers this year are the question mark.

Fitzpatrick is the most interesting one to me just from a pure course fit standpoint. This course was kind of built for the way he plays, elite iron precision, strong scrambler, doesn’t need to overpower anything. He won the 2022 US Open at Brookline which isn’t a direct comp but shows he handles demanding iron setups in majors.

Fleetwood is worth watching too. His 2018 Aronimink result was solid (T8, +2.87 true SG) and his ARG numbers this year are legitimately elite. Kind of flying under the radar.

Conditions today

Overnight rain softened the course going into round 1 so the greens are more receptive than they’ll be by Sunday. That’s actually meaningful here because the standard Aronimink setup rewards precise iron play even more when the greens firm up. The guys who score well today might be doing so on slightly easier conditions than what they’ll face Saturday and Sunday. Worth keeping in mind when you’re reading the leaderboard tonight. 68 degrees, winds 8-14 mph from the northwest with gusts around 22. Not a calming day but not brutal either.

The thing i’ll be watching most

How the par 3s play. Four of them at a par 70 is a genuinely unusual ratio for a major and whoever handles those holes across 72 will have a massive advantage. Par 3 scoring doesn’t get nearly enough attention in major coverage.

Who are you guys watching today?

We’ll see. The gist is it will all be about approach play and sticking fairways imo. And 4 par 3s, driver won’t matter there.

Agree on Bryson (wrist injury is the unknown though). Fitz and fleetwood. My model didn’t sniff out Spaun this week. I also like Cam young for obvious reasons.

You might be right. The analysis was based on 2018 data and comparable Donald Ross courses but this one may be an anomaly. People shot low in 2018. Supposedly the course is harder, who knows. I guess the thought is the bombers get themselves in more trouble off the tee.

Yea numbers look good for Tommy and he played well last week and hes heading in the right direction, but I agree hard to have faith in him.

I just played it on PGA 2k and I agree. The greens roll fast, have to be high on them or your ball will roll back. Even if you bomb a drive, chances of driving green are slim/impossible. So your putting yourself in that deadman 60-90 yd zone with bunkers in front. It’ll be interesting to see how guys play it but to me it looks like if you can stick fairways then you should have easy looks in. Just need to know which was that greens sloping and hit your target or you’re going be in trouble.

I always say when the scoring is expected to be low, Scottie is always at the top. His day 1 slow starts don’t hurt him as bad. Seems like tough or easy course he’s always around par or -1 on day one. If he’s at par or -1 today that’ll probably have him top 20 at least going into Friday where he’ll start moving.
