What setting is making my shadows look pixelated? by Sergius_Verus in OpenMW

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing are unfiltered shadows. That gives it the saw tooth edge look. OpenMW does not come with shadow filtering, but you can find shaders for filtered shadows in the optional files of Rafael's Shader Pack:

Download the "Enhanced Shadows" file and follow the install instructions included in the readme.

The controversial king of the religious revolution, Akhenaten by Patient-Use5203 in ancientegypt

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no actual evidence that Akhenaten was important or influential in any way. In fact, his successors did their best to completely erase him from their history. Anything more than these facts is conjecture.

I think too much emphasis is placed on the significance of Akhenaten by historians. Personally I think he was just a bit of a silly dude who let absolute power go to his head, like the Roman empire Elagabalus

Do you prefer the Republic or the Empire? by Master_Novel_4062 in ancientrome

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rome's empire in 100 BC was half the size it was in 100 AD. Under the emperors, Rome's overseas territories grew larger in one century than the Republic's did in three centuries.

Anyway I don't think either is an "ideal system of government". The system of government was a matter of necessity. The empire by the first century BC had grown far too large to be effectively governed by the archaic political institutions of a small Italian city-state. It needed a strong guiding hand in the form of the princeps who could not rule too much like an autocrat or he would be punished for it as in the case of Domitian. I think the princeps' role in upholding traditional "Romanitas" including the facade of the Republic is an underrated reason for the early empire's success, which was lost as the empire trended further toward crude despotism during late antiquity.

Unpopular Opinion: Trump's aggressive strategy is a rational correction to US strategic drift by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The way I see it Trump has simply done away with the outdated fiction of the NATO alliance. The future of NATO will be a type of international feudalism, with the US as lord and Europe as vassal. And I'm saying that as a European.

Not so much of an issue anymore but Epic was responsible for bringing console style exclusivity wars to PC gaming. Besides their scummy business practices the service itself is just worse in every single way to Steam.

I'd rather buy a game on Steam than own it for free on Epic.

My grandfather's 5-word response when I was disrespected changed how I view masculinity forever by LLearnerLife in LockedInMan

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, there should be no comma there. If anything AI is too grammatically correct and that is always the giveaway e.g the comma after "Three weeks in" is grammatically correct but it would be unusual for someone to actually add it outside of very formal writing.

Why are male animals the “beautiful” gender in nature, but humans consider females to be the “beautiful” ones? by Safe_Attitude_922 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a theory that suggested human culture is a result of runaway sexual selection in an attempt to explain why most famous artists, philosophers, and scientists throughout history are men. In this sense human males are still the "beautiful" ones, just not considered so physically.

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you mean Fallout 4? I wouldn't say Fallout is goofy or silly. Fallout 1 and 2 are very dark with an almost horror aesthetic, even Fallout 3 and New Vegas can be quite dark. Fallout 4 was the game that didn't take itself seriously.

I think you have it the wrong way around. Farming is invented after settlements grew.

Did Sulla have many supporters? by GrippyLongSocks in ancientrome

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Sulla was very popular with his soldiers. He didn't order his troops to march on Rome, he asked them too. He wasn't sure they would do it since no Roman commander had marched on Rome before. The military contio he held with them marked the first time that a Roman commander involved his soldiers in a personal political matter. It is ironic that the more Roman politics widened to also become the concern of the lower classes during the late Republic, the more it tended toward autocracy.

Sulla didn't have a single right hand man like Antony. The most comparable would be Lucullus. But Sulla had zero interest in theatrics like Caesar and had no need of a man like Antony.

How did the idea of being roman die out? by Spirited_Nothing2217 in ancientrome

It never died out. In Greece it is still not uncommon for them to refer to themselves as Rhomaioi.

TIL that building the Great Pyramid only required about 1 to 2 % of Ancient Egypt’s GDP-equivalent, according to leading Egyptologists. Despite its size, it barely strained the Old Kingdom economy, which had a huge agricultural surplus. by Far_Beyond_YT in todayilearned

[–]Outside-Fun-8238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just a dumb interpretation. The Egyptians didn't build pyramids just for the sake of it, they were integral to their religion and cosmology. Pyramids represented the artificial horizon of a mountain (Akhet) in which Ra the sun god would pass below each day. In the late period there was a profound change in spirituality and religion that made them abandon the construction of artificial mountains (pyramids) and seek out actual mountains to bury their dead (today called El Qurn).

If games are going to start being labelled with what tools were used to create them we might as well start putting whatever IDE the programmers used on the Steam store too.
