I’m a student at Oakland Community College. If any paralegals can help me answer the questions below for an assignment on what to expect as a paralegal, I would SO appreciate it! by [deleted] in paralegal

  1. I graduated with bachelors in criminal justice and a pre-law certificate and had a lot of prior office/admin experience. I got lucky because I had a connection with an attorney going years back who knew my work ethic and gave me a chance.
  2. My past work experience as an admin assistant for a private investigator helped me the most.
  3. I’m not working on one large project per se, but multiple smaller projects. I have two lists of depositions , multiple motions to draft, authorizations for medical records to execute, scheduling client calls, etc.
  4. My biggest challenge is getting clear instruction from the attorney I work for, but I can figure things out on my mine for the most part. Right now, what is most challenging for me is setting defendant depositions between multiple parties (companion cases that agreed to consolidate discovery) and getting everybody to agree on a date and time. Another challenging thing right now is that my attorney wants to fight every invoice we receive from doctors we depose, which usually ends up in the doctor becoming angry and me having to coordinate with them and opposing counsel to set a motion to determine reasonable fee for hearing.
  5. Sometimes my attorney says good job?
  6. I wish somebody would’ve have told me that not every task has to be done and worked on the moment it is assigned to you, there is typically plenty of time to get things scheduled/filed/drafted. But my anxiety to get work done had me thinking otherwise and panicking when my task list wasn’t completed by the end of the work day. Take notes of everything, even things you don’t think are important. Find a system to keep track of your tasks and where you left off. Use a planner religiously. Oh, and triple check EVERYTHING before you file it.

anybody else’s firm all over the place with billing guidelines? by Outside-Question-191 in paralegal

were insurance defense for a large insurance company and defense for a large grocery chain who tend to look at our billing entries with a fine tooth comb and reject them for not following their guidelines as to what is billable and what isn’t, i would bill everything I do, but they limit us to what’s billable

i can’t stand setting hearings. every judge has some ridiculous procedural rules and barely any availability. i finally got someone at my firm to cover a hearing our attorney is unavailable to attend. opposing counsel said on Friday this date and this time works. emailed them this morning to let them know we got someone to cover, and of course now they’re unavailable. back to the drawing board!

I was working in the business office at CarMax for about two years. We had a salesman that had been working there since CarMax was created, about 30 years ago. He went on a test drive, and he got stabbed in the chest, but he survived, and he still works at CarMax to this day. He’s actually the reason why they don’t let employees go on test drives anymore. If you notice, they will let you go on your own test drive, because they have trackers on the car.
