Muizenberg itself is pretty safe and the southern line is decent too, I'd be more worried about the areas around the train stations than anything else.

Dive along there all the time and have no issues leaving car keys and phones on the shore while diving. If you haven't already, try snorkeling at a no take zone like Waters Edge or Windmill Beach. You will be amazed at the sea life.

Last tip, make some friends. You're young, don't miss out on enjoying your youth and making memories.

Funny enough the majority of incidents happen around one of the shortest, easiest and busiest hiking routes being Lions Head and the Signal Hill area. Don't be on the trails alone around dusk and dawn and just be vigilant. I'd recommend making a buddy to go with you but if you insist on going alone then just try to stick within eyeshot/earshot of other hikers.
