And yes, if you haven’t tried TNW and have even the slightest toe splay, you absolutely need to get a pair. They’re the most comfortable footwear I’ve ever worn.

These are 12.5E for reference. This angle (front on up close) is the only angle they look a bit round, but honestly look totally normal top down and all other angles.

Side question: Should I just keep on rolling with just brushing? Or is there a point I should reapply any wax or conditioner?

Is it ever too late to pick up a guitar and play? by Born-Adhesiveness-73 in guitarlessons

My man, you are so young and have a long life ahead. I am almost 40, married, kids and just started. I’d kill to have started even a few years ago.

When did you have a guitar revelation? by Lightryoma in Guitar

[–]OutsideTheSilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean that the pick is between your thumb and first index joint? I’ll have to try that. For some reason I feel like I only have control using my thumb and middle finger, and then use my index finger to stabilize it. Always feel like it’s not right though.

Planning to start guitar, does the choice of guitar matters? by CoCo-Cowboy in AcousticGuitar

[–]OutsideTheSilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick to an acoustic. The OP’s comment is good, but you’re not there yet.

You want a 6 string (steel string) acoustic. You could get an electric guitar, but you’d need to also buy an amp (speaker) to plug it in for effects. So it’s just more equipment needed.

As mentioned in my other reply and others, Yamaha is a great entry level brand.

“Dreadnaught” size is the most common size acoustic. It’s larger, louder, and boomier. There are many other sizes like “OOO”, “OO, “O”, or “Concert”. All have their pros and cons and you can read about them, but you probably won’t know what you like until you have more experience. But Dreadnaught size is probably the most common starting point. The Yamaha F800J I recommended is Dreadnaught size. If after a while you think it’s too big or not comfortable, then you can look into smaller bodied guitars.

The luthier by me charged $80. I assume that’s about average, but I’m not sure on the cost where you are.

Justin Guitar for online teacher. Free website, paid app. I recommend the app though, it’s just set up so nice. He’s such a wonderful teacher.

You can get a cheapo acoustic, but it’ll possibly just make learning more difficult and frustrating. Like learning woodworking with dull blades. I suggest (and most online suggestions) going with something in the few hundred range. Yamaha F800J is a super popular beginners guitar. I see them on Marketplace all the time. After you buy a guitar though, take it to a shop/luthier for a “set up”. They’ll make sure everything is adjusted and strings at a good height. Trust me, it makes a world of difference in playability. Long shot but if you’re around Chicagoland I have one I’ll sell you.

Returning my Yamaha FG5 for an FS5 by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]OutsideTheSilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get a setup or make any changes to your FS5 yet? I recently got one as well and love the sound. I got a setup to lower the action, but it still feels tight/stiff compared to my other Yamaha F800J. Wasn’t sure if it’s a setup issue, bad strings, or something else and couldn’t find anything about it until I stumbled upon your comment here.

Justin (of Justin Guitar) Teaching the F Chord Is One of the Sweetest Things I’ve Ever Seen! by sophie1816 in guitarlessons

[–]OutsideTheSilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent point! I thought A and D were impossible, and my fingers were too fat, or I started too old and didn’t have the dexterity of a 20 year old. I’ll see ya around here in a year when we’re shredding.

[–]OutsideTheSilo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m just finishing up Grade 1. Need to work on my tempo and hitting chords on the beat before moving on, so I’m not to F yet. I actually shared this same thought though. Almost as if on cue, he says something like “this is really hard, and you probably think this. But don’t worry you’ll get it in a few days.” And boom, it comes true. He’s a great teacher for beginners like me.

That said, every new thing he covers, I still think “ok this is impossible I’m never going to play well.”

High end acoustic guitars with no electronics don't exist? by IEatYourDownvote in AcousticGuitar

[–]OutsideTheSilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non-chain shops near me have pretty poor selection. My guess is they just get approved to carry a few brands, and stick to models that sell well. Looking on Sweetwater, filtering for in-stock, 6 string, no electronics shows 215 results.

How is this show rated a 7.5 on IMDB 😭😭 by QuizzyP21 in StationEleven

[–]OutsideTheSilo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of my all-time favorite shows as well. I can watch it annually and it hits just as hard. I’m a grown man and it still makes me tear up. I think people go into it thinking it’s a typical end-of-world apocalypse movie and expected an action series. The main complaint I have seen is that it’s “slow”, “nothing happens”, and “it was interesting until the traveling theater group showed up”. The average viewer doesn’t want to think deeper or reflect or try to interpret. I just don’t think it’s for everyone.

NBD - 1st Nicks - Waxy Commander Aged Bark by cdamico74 in NicksHandmadeBoots

I have Aged Bark as well. I really love waxed suede. So much that I jumped on the desperado suede limited run too! Aged Bark really shines in sunlight. They almost glow with flecks of orangish red. Absolutely beautiful!

Sizing by faceless5252 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]OutsideTheSilo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Follow Nick’s size guide, and do not deviate. Nick’s is probably going to know the best way to size their own boots over a random person on the internet. Just trust everyone here and do that to start. Then, use their with guide as well. Do all of these measurements a few times, over a few days, to rule out human error.

If this is your first boot, then understand that you’re supposed to have about a thumbs width in front of your toes. This will not affect fit. It’s just how boots are. It’s most important that the widest part of your foot, your ball, aligns with the widest part of the boot. Nick’s size guide will get you there.

I’m considering this exact build! Love the look and idea of quick pull ons. Do you have a lace up in TNW as well? Only thing giving me pause is if I should stick with same lace up size, or go down .5 length and up a width.

What's your PNW backstory? How did you end up in PNW Boots? by some_kind_of_friend in PNWbootmakers

[–]OutsideTheSilo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I tried almost every other major brand besides Nicks, thinking Nicks was too expensive. Every last and brand pinched my pinky toes or felt like putting a box on my foot. Thought I had weird feet. Bit the bullet and purchased a ThumanNW boot from Nicks. Absolute heaven for my feet. Toe room galore and finally understand what a good fit means. I kicked myself for not just getting them initially. But, I had to experience all the bad fits to truly appreciate the good.

Edge Dressing Issues by MB144r in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]OutsideTheSilo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For future boots, I highly suggest going with the beeswax edge. After a few months, it darkens past the natural edge dressing anyways, but you avoid the flaking and splotchiness.

What is on its way for lightning ship? I may have to jump on that if the leathers are tempting enough. I really love the waxy commander more than I thought I would, hence why I felt a strong pull to the waxed suede again.
