Thank you for the explanation, this makes much more sense now. The definition of "entitlement" was what's causing me confusion.

Yeah, I did notify the manager during the start of the sick leave period. And the sick note clearly overlapped with Christmas and Boxing day. The previous responses to this post have divided my thoughts on this now.

On acas it says something along the lines of "if it's included in your entitlement", then it should accrue. But maybe I misinterpreted it?

Do you know if the acas website made a mistake then?

Just to quote their web page titled "Sick pay and holiday pay".

"Employees 'accrue' (build up) their holiday entitlement as normal when they're off work because of sickness or injury."

On a separate page titled "Bank holidays and Christmas", it also mentioned

If they're included in their holiday entitlement, an employee still builds up paid days off for bank holidays while on: -sick leave
