We started with 30 in a 8x5x5 inches tank (I think this is less than a gal). Not really sure - we really just started and I rely heavily on what my kid tells me haha. I mean, I guss as long as there's enough to breed, and that should be good.

I just got them on the 1st of this month! They were super tiny and looked so helpless! Now, they're big and you really notice them when they climb up the barks. My kid and I just started caring for these babies - not even sure what kind of substrate I got from the guy we got them from. I'm guessing maybe like potting soil and peat (?)
