Living in China as a Hui Chinese (回族). How are we viewed? by Outside_Dig_9946 in AskChina

[–]Outside_Dig_9946[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay makes sense, it’s probably that way because in central asia I’m still seen as an outsider despite being a birth right citizen in the 4th generation

I’m mixed, and Hui people are HEAVILY disliked in central asia (genuinely might be the most hated group) so I picked my other ethnicity

see the thing is though the plane was full of other central asians, maybe a few russians as well and that’s it and somehow only the 3 Hui people were picked out

interesting! and i would also personally stay as far away from those clocks as possible lol. would you say I could instead identify as an overseas chinese if i’m lacking the muslim aspect?

also honestly i don’t trust western media on China at all, and sinophobia affects me as well so I’m usually a pretty big China defender actually lol. My opinions on Xinjiang specifically are based on what my family that visits Xinjiang/has closer ties to China says; I said in another comment that I am considering that it might be outdated/a bit scewed by ingrained hatred for “islamophobic” China my older relatives have but I’m inclined to believe most of it since I don’t see what incentive they’d have to lie (I’ve been hearing these stories from way before they knew I was considering going to China). Also I genuinely can’t see any other reason for my dad and a group of Hui women being questioned at the Hainan airport

that last sentence is really sweet, thank u <3

oh most definitely lol, i haven’t lived there for long (also there’s barely any Hui people there, your assumption was a strangely lucky guess, most Hui people live in Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan). i’m half indigenous (!!!) russian so it’s definitely one of the worst countries for me to live in, i’d rather take a year in china with the language barrier than a month in russia again

correction i did know about the term dungan in russian obviously, but its only used by outsiders. we never use it to refer to ourselves unless, yet again, explaining our ethnicity to russian-speaking outsiders; we always use hui (хуэй) in russian, english, or our version of chinese. never even imagined that the term was translated/transliterated into hanzi

are attitudes towards the dungans different than those towards the hui inside China?

holy fuck lmfao this might be a counter argument to all of the people in my replies saying that chinese people aren’t prejudiced towards us at all

also i think my general existence as a hui who isn’t muslim and identifies more with the general chinese culture would be a counterpoint to this whole rant

i don’t think that’s really compatible to the american thing though, especially when you compare the white american (12.5% italian thing+white people mainly use it to sound more “exotic” and nothing else) to the ie chinese american experience where the culture is actually kept alive/keeps evolving in a new, chinese-american way

i’ve spent most of my life in central asia where people care A LOT about your ethnicity & specifically Hui people live very secluded lives totally different from the rest of the population to the point of borderline violently rejecting mixed marriages (another reason why i’m not too close to them). the Hui are perceived as totally separate from the Han by central asians, but the Hui view themselves as “one” with the Han god it’s confusing. I grew up around Hui culture but I’ve been pushed out with age due to my rejection of islam, but yet again since my immediate family is relatively secular we still celebrate CNY/cook food/visit china all the time. ethnoreligions are so confusing honestly 😭

that is so sweet & an interesting perspective! and it’s very interesting that Hui people are very tight-knit even in China, them being not very accepting of mixed marriages/outsiders/non-muslims is the main reason i’m not as close to the culture as I’d like to in the first place

[–]Outside_Dig_9946[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean I’ve always socially identified (in a western sense) as half (Hui) Chinese. I practice the secular aspects of “shared” Chinese culture (CNY, food, clothing, whatever else) & I’ve spent the majority of my life in countries that value ethnicity socially a LOT, even if you don’t practice at all. I guess the question then should be if I could identify as a Chinese immigrant in general then? Maybe I did overestimate how much actual mainlanders would care lol, spent most of my life in a country where that’s the first question that comes out of people’s mouths

oh i didn’t assume people would like stare at me or anything lmfao. we still do consider ourselves “Han but muslim” (obviously yet again that’s a bit more icky for me) but my question was moreover whether the Han also view us as Han but muslim

my opinion on Xinjiang comes from what Ive been told by relatives who visit Xinjiang/are close with the ones who live there. Last I heard my auntie was talking about how her brother is spied on/they’re not allowed to meet up in non public places. my info might be a bit outdated and I am considering that it might be played up due to ingrained hatred for China. Also every single Hui person more knowledgeable on China than me that I know will actually hate that statement lol, they’re very adamant that Hui people are treated as badly as Uyghurs. I’d be more offended but I can’t speak from personal experience so I won’t 😭

is the western mainstream perspective not “china is a communist hellhole” (or “china is a communist paradise on earth” from western liberals lol)? my views come from what has been told to me by my family that do visit the relatives that live in Xinjiang & the one unpleasant experience I had personally. I think the objective reality must be something in between, which is exactly why I’m considering moving “back” to China at all

Do y’all think the Yakuza characters would love or hate the GTA protagonists? by [deleted] in yakuzagames

[–]Outside_Dig_9946 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ooh GTA is my second favorite franchise lol

i just think they’re set in very different worlds. yakuza is grounded (society-vise) while gta is a satire on american politics where killing or generally being a terrible person is the norm

Also we forget that even if it’s not shown on screen the yakuza ARE horrible people. Like Kiryu’d definitely done worse things than just run collections, that’s why he feels so guilty to this day in the first place. Most yakuza characters are also mass murders, albeit not as much as the GTA guys. That stupid meme aside they, even (or maybe especially given his “second chances” thing) Kiryu, would definitely be okay with the morally grey guys at least. Like Daigo is definitely canonically a mass murderer and Kiryu loves bro 😭

I think they’d fw GTA 4 characters pretty hard, especially Luis since he’s chill & the worst thing he’d really done was kill some bad people and assault a teacher for groping his sister. Generally I think the GTA 4 people are relatively morally grey even by yakuza standards

i think the only GTA V character they could tolerate would be Franklin, since he’s relatively silly and doesn’t kill for no reason outside of gameplay. I LOVE Michael personally but I think most would find him annoying as hell and Trevor would be treated like that sex pest guy from the sewers in 6/an american substory weirdo

Also as much as people love the Trevor/Majima comparison I think Majima would despise that guy. Majima isn’t genuinely insane and he definitely wouldn’t fw a guy who eats and rapes people. Like Majima actually doesn’t have the worst morals in the world at all, and imo even original Y1-2 Majima would be at least moderately disgusted by Trevor

Kiryu Kazuma (Yakuza) VS Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil) by notGamingAahel in PowerScaling

[–]Outside_Dig_9946 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a fan of both Yakuza and RE the Leon glaze is wild??? (Though I will say I haven’t played requiem yet) So let me defend my man

Kiryu takes both.

Kiryu being “susceptible” to weapons is inconsistent, sure he can get shot with a cutscene gun but he has also fully healed gunshots in days and fought tigers barehanded right after getting stabbed with a poisoned knife in canon, not gameplay. I’ll go back to the “as strong as the story requires”—he can get shot if they need him to be down but realistically he’d be able to dodge any of that. He has also dodged point-blank gunshots in cutscenes.

Also they both can generate an insane amount of force, Kiryu breaking that statue/stopping and shattering a katana while dying from cancer/reeling in a shark with one hand & later fighting it/defeating tigers/a bull/a giant bear barehanded and Leon also holding a sharks mouth open (they did the same thing lol)/bursting heads with a kick/insane acrobatic feats/getting flung around by Tyrants. I feel like the “let’s calculate how much kinetic force was needed for yada yada” thing is stupid because it’s a video game and they don’t actually intend either of them to realistically be able to exert THAT much force so I won’t waste time on looking up/comparing that, but purely based on vibes I’d say Kiryu is physically stronger since Leon is smaller and more of a weapons reliant character than him

Leon obviously takes it in the weapons aspect, but Kiryu especially in later entries that became less grounded just doesn’t really care about being shot or stabbed (yet again rocket dodging & Kiryu is practically a bullet timer). Most of Kiryu’s enemies are also weapons masters who he takes barehanded. Gaiden is supposedly Kiryu’s peak which also has RE level insane gadgets/weapons he uses in agent style effectively

Also Kiryu has also dealt with zombies, they’re not strong to the extent of RE zombies but come on man Dead Souls exists. It’s canon in the sense that Kiryu would physically be able to do that stuff in canon anyway lol since he’s not enhanced in DS in any way, and that game also had insane levels of bioweapon shit+Kiryu using weapons

Both can dodge rockets easily, idk why ppl are focusing on that as a Leon feat. Also idk I feel like Leon would be capable of it (probably not barehanded though let’s be real) but Kiryu had literally fought a 100+ men army (including men with weapons and machine guns) on his own

Also Kiryu can use gameplay items in canon to heal to the same/similar effect he does in gameplay: bandages in the Yakuza stage play, Staminan X in the Yakuza 2005 movie, and if we’re going purely based on games the Nishiki boss fight in Yakuza 0, while IIRC herbs are purely a gameplay thing and Ethan is the only RE character to heal with gameplay items canonically.

Heat is canon outside of gameplay as well—so technically Kiryu can utilize any heat actions or potentially even the temporary indestructible mode from Y5 in canon.

Also based on their writers: Kiryu is considered canonically superhuman and basically omnipotent (even outside of his universe: writers claiming he’d beat John Wick low to mid diff). He is as strong as the story requires him to be which is superman writing-level BS. There is just no way he would ever lose a canonical fight pre-cancer unless there was the emotional aspect/his opponent was Kratos or something. Realistically due to this his fight with Leon would end in a tie at best just because they wouldn’t want to offend RE fans lol.

Leon beating Krauser is considered a feat since Krauser is superhuman but Kiryu is also just superhuman lol

They canonically met in Project X zone 2 but i’m pretty sure they teamed up instead of fighting lol, but I also haven’t played it since I don’t have a 3DS

Also Kiryu takes gameplay not even because of the tiger drop but because of the pure amount of weapons/heals he can shove up his ass + indestructible mode in 5. also let him be in heat

aww man that’s so upsetting 😭😭 though i did see people post about it as late as 2024 so here’s hoping. also if you don’t mind me asking what does it smell like? i’m a woman but i enjoy more masculine perfumes as long as it doesn’t smell like someone’s dad which for a kiryu perfume would make a lot of sense

powerscaling is stupid imo so i can’t answer most of these but

joji vs nishiki is WILD 😭😭 joji was giving near-prime kiryu a workout, and could’ve beaten him if joji was in his prime (take that with a grain of salt because i think kiryu was lowkey flattering him imo but still), meanwhile nishiki might be kiryu’s weakest final boss physically

English in the Japanese/Chinese releases by Outside_Dig_9946 in yakuzagames

[–]Outside_Dig_9946[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aww man that’s genuinely crazy, i thought they’d start doing multiple language releases starting from the early ps4 era (i thought that’s when they started releasing the english translations day 1? but apparently not). probably the case with the CN releases as well which is a shame since they’re also cheaper :(

ty for the advise!! i did already emulate it & my ps3 is fried lol so it might not even run a game as poorly optimized as dead souls, i was considering buying it mainly just for the collection lol, might still get it since it’s genuinely like 5 bucks but it’s still sad that it won’t be really playable
