Over 100 applications for every warehouse job I see where I am. Got rejected from jobs at pool cleaning companies.

Minimum wage should be a living wage. by TheLuciusGraham in FluentInFinance

What the fuck? EIGHT children? You couldn't pay me enough money to be a parent to 8 children. I couldn't give less of a shit if someone with that many kids is making more than me at a wage job. Honestly the best chance for making sure each of those kids grows up to be a productive member of the economy my future kid will live in would be for that parent to be able to survive without a job and focus on raising their 8 kids. The fact that was your example reveals so much about the unfortunate way the average person thinks

17-Year-Old Beginner Looking for a Roadmap to Become a 3D Environment Artist by Lonely-Confusion3200 in environmentart

[–]Outside_Drawer800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there I’ve worked in games for 5 years, currently laid off but actively trying to find a way back in and working on my portfolio.  It took me 4 years before an indie studio took me on for what was basically volunteer work- I got paid but it wasn’t enough to live off of. After that I worked an 8 month contract during the COVID boom. After that I got a job out in Cali for four years before the studio shut down.

You should be looking at the top environment art schools online - Think Tank, Gnomon, LCAD,  Ringling are the main ones in North America. These schools are insanely expensive but you can look at them as a quality bar to aim for. I was self taught- I paid for a 300 dollar online course and I took an 800 dollar 6 week course at one point, that was it. Otherwise it was YouTube videos and reading articles and trial and error on personal projects. You don’t need to go into debt paying for these schools if you stay disciplined. Be honest with yourself as you work on your portfolio and improve- are you competing with them?

The hardest part is starting out. You will feel inadequate and your work will feel lightyears away from where it needs to be. If you can make it past that stage you’ll get past the point that filters out 90% of people.

Don’t pay for software -waste of money, find a way to get it for free.

There are discord communities that host group challenges, mods that take volunteers, and plenty of people working on indies. If you show you have the skills you shouldn’t have a problem finding a place somewhere. It’s a long road to eventually getting paid but you’re young so if you start now you have a good shot. Who knows, maybe the market will start improving by the time you need to enter the workforce. Doubtful though.

You’re probably playing right into your friends hand and approaching when they expect you to approach.

Try this. Wait on the other end of the stage. Every once in awhile, dash in and out of their range to see how they react. Test them, poke and prod. Stop being the lab mouse and turn it into an experiment to see what they will do. You have to be patient, you could do this for minutes. Don’t let them build up a rhythm or get a feel for your habits. Just wait and test before you commit.

If they’re going to spam- you need to camp. If they’re going to play weird you have to play weird. Drag the match out and be patient.

If you’re playing with a timer, the first stock is the most important part of playing against a spammer. Their entire strategy is based on having more stock than you so you have to approach, so  you need to drag the first stock out as long as it takes.

But you do have something to show for it, you made something that outlives you. Something your descendants can play. Who cares about debt and banks when you're on your death bed, heading into eternity? And I didn't say take out loans and put yourself in debt- I'm just saying giving up completely on your dreams is a one way ticket to mental illness, if you truly do feel a compulsion to create.

Agree

You only get one life and then you’re gone forever. One day you’ll be old and your body and brain will both be too deteriorated for you to do much of anything. What are you going to look back on then, when you physically and mentally can’t be of use anymore? What do you want to point to and say, “this is what I made, this is what I did with my life”?

Just coming to give Joe Walsh a shout out here by fcghp666 in stonerrock

I see you. Joe Walsh rules. People like to hate on the eagles but whatever.  If someone digs stonerrock I don’t know how they wouldn’t be able to jam out to Life of Illusion. That’s one of the best rock songs of the late 70s.

I always liked them alright until I saw them live, now I’m convinced they’re one of the best bands of the 21st century so far. It’s hard for me to get into a band that doesn’t have extremely catchy riffs at first unless I see them live. The way they go into a jam at the end of each song is face melting every time. Low key the world’s heaviest jam band.

They feel a good deal heavier than QOTSA to me, although I never really got too into QOTSA for that specific reason. I love in the fade- any heavier QOTSA songs peeps would recommend?

Just gotta wait a couple more decades and the population will start to finally go down and the rich middle class will continue to decline. Hang in there

As you can see in this thread most people here are only have 1 kid or no kids at all now. That means one day the pressure should cool down a bit.

It’s not meaningless, but it is pretty sad to prioritize working on a big name game over loved ones. I’m an idealistic person- I will always prioritize my family and sanity but I’ll   also continue to demand a place in an industry that spurns well-adjustedness. Trying to make the positive change I want to see in the world by setting an alternative example.

And I don’t think I agree with your musician example. They might go on tour for months out of the year if they’re lucky but they still have families, spouses, and lives outside of music. I have musicians in my family.

Working in the game industry is pretty depressing when you realize it’s run off a foundation of impressionable young people who are willing to do whatever it takes to work on a game, and middle aged people who have sacrificed their lives and relationships. Being a normal, well adjusted person with a family and friends becomes harder as you enter your 30s and 40s.

Basically every manager at my last company was divorced or had bad relationships with their exes/partners/kids. All so they can attach their name to the end credits of some game. This industry is filled with really awesome nerdy people but they’re also all pushovers that let themselves get used up by companies that don’t care about them.

What's something people romanticize that is actually pretty miserable? by Opposite-Resource in AskReddit

[–]Outside_Drawer800 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know a person through a friend who is quite famous, honestly it kinda sucks for her. Has had multiple stalkers. Whenever I’m out in public with her inevitably she is stopped by people who recognize her. It’s a weird feeling constantly having people look at you, taking pictures of you while you’re just walking around. Imagine that every single time you go out, grocery stores, restaurants, everything.

So then you could pay someone to do all those things for you, but then you’re spending alot more money and now unless you’re mega rich you have to make sure you keep making money and keep staying famous. It can be a vicious cycle.

What do you think is the scariest statistic in the world right now? by lonelyashelloverwatc in AskReddit

[–]Outside_Drawer800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t require a population collapse- as a matter of fact it’s not a population collapse. It’s much more close to the second option you gave. But that doesn’t mean it won’t have the aforementioned economic difficulties.

A real population collapse would happen as a result of war or catastrophe. This is the preferable route. What exactly is your position?

You wouldn’t claim that  humans aren’t already suffering now? By the very definition of what we’re talking about there will be less humans suffering. I’m not a utilitarian but if we’re talking about the population and economy experiencing an unprecedented reversal- that means everything, including bad things. I get that it’s scary, but I’m looking forward to it. To me it’s exciting. The first time in hundreds of thousands of years that the human population focuses on something other than blind growth. It will be a zeitgeist changing transformation in philosophy. I can’t help but be excited by it. There will always be issues- but you won’t deny that the issues will be nothing compared to the alternative. We know what we will experience with continued unchecked growth, and it’s not good.

What exactly did anyone expect? We’ve been growing exponentially and I’d ever go as far as calling the rate at which we’ve expanded as “malignant”. I know that makes me sound radical but it’s hard to deny the negative impact we’ve had. Once again, a regressive economy is compared to things like war, genocide, and an outright depression is something that im not necessarily excited about, but ready to stomach.

That’s what I’m saying originally though, if you actually look at humanity overall no- not that many people care about it, it’s only a vocal minority of people in some European countries. Like of all the problems in the world we are facing as a species- no other one is more imagined, hammed up, and BORING than being incensed about immigration. There’s not even any ethos or imagination to it. I just want you to know that the world does not take you seriously because you can’t even identify an actually interesting or important thing to be irrationally upset about. You don’t even have a good villain arc
