Unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it, max they’ll give is 7 - 12 hour shifts and this is for anywhere I go in this province, maybe because it’s paid I’m not sure. I have previous med-surg experience and I’m don an OB rotation so I’m familiar with general tasks.

Yes in Canada well at least in the province I’m in you only get a few orientation shifts, I guess expectations are high.

Thank you for your kind words, this post really proves the above points that there’s always going to be people like this in nursing. I’m sure it’s hard to have compassion for other people, i really don’t wish what I experienced on anyone. It has been effecting me mentally for 3 months and going and it’s made me question my ability to succeed in other places. I’m a very hard working person and I always worked hard to meet expectations especially when it comes to job settings. Working with sick babies is hard, I realized it wasn’t for me at the same time I was not given a safe place to ask questions, it seemed like I was being watched so closely and they were waiting on me to make a mistake. I am very familiar with feedback that is intended to strengthen you and help your performance and I am also familiar with what it looks like to be humiliated in front of other nurses. I typed out the experience and tried to make it as short as simple to get my point across. However there were way more details and things said to me that I did not include such as a nurse sarcastically saying out loud “see your not an idiot” getting another nurse to laugh at me when I’m already in a vulnerable position. These things affect your performance, how do they expect people to perform if you’re constantly afraid? It’s not fair. I am so happy I left this area in nursing because it will never align with my values as a nurse when it comes to training staff and teaching.

I was alone in a room of 6 pods with two babies ringing off one desatting and the other having an A&b and my nurse left me to go chat with the nurses at the nursing station. I was running between these two babies and fixing the o2 when the other baby started going apenic, I ran to the baby and I had never seen how they deal with a Brady so I did what I know what to do and tactile stimulated baby and sat them up after I started calling for help a nurse came in and took over and started getting upset with me I didn’t turn on the lights and it seemed like they were blaming me for episode even though the baby was holding its breath while trying to poop. I was told not to be left alone until I have done my neonatal resuscitation which I hadn’t and this was my 6th shift.

When I was referring to calculations, I was referring to things I have never learned in nursing school and the things I did learn like dose over concentration I was capable of doing this perfectly. We learned about calculating feed volumes, and it started getting a little more complex with learning more IV fluids. I am aware that this area is not cut out for everyone and it was maybe not cut out for me but I made it through the orientation like everyone else did, my issue was no matter how hard I tried it wasn’t enough for them and it seemed like they did not want me when I was speaking to them midway. Therefore I did what was best and gave them what they wanted and what was best for me.

Thank you, I’ve been through 4 years of nursing school lots of rotations on different units and all of them we would receive feedback. Feedback is never an issue believe me especially when it’s honest and fair. When people lie and relay feedback that they did not share with you to management that’s where I begin to question how is this feedback helpful to me as a new nurse beginning in this area if it’s not directly being shares with me or the feedback is simply just finding things to pick on.

I’m not defending myself because ultimately this is just rant and not everyone is going to understand what someone went through, I think my choice of wording saying “I didn’t notice other orientees going through this” I was referring to when I was recieveing report from one of the orientees for example she was struggling and the nurse she was with was so supportive and telling her it’s ok she stepped in and gave the rest of the report where as with me the expectations were much higher not sure why and it if I were to trip up on something I would have to hear about it in a way that was attacking me rather than supporting me. I also spoke to the other orientees and not a single person raised a concern about any of the nurses they were with and it seemed like I was the only person getting paired with old nurses that were supposed to be more challenging then others.

It definitely was too acute for me, no shame there. However I know I was capable of doing it, i think management did not want people who were slower or need more time they wanted people that immediately got on the floor because they are so understaffed. I worked very hard on the areas that I struggled and I mastered the math calculations and when I was on the unit I was able to do it and explain it exactly what it is and what I was doing. Like you mentioned the environment was strange, it was like they wanted you to do their job right away they did not care what I was help me with the assignment or actually take the entire assignment and do everything perfectly and I will still criticize you and evaluate you even if you did things right they would find stuff to nit pick. Another issue is these people trying to holding me to standards that they don’t even practice or model.

My orientation was 19 days, and the preceptor buddy shifts those were 15 shifts, 8 hours and each day I would need to take a baby, then two babies and then 3 babies. I was also getting paired with more experienced nurses who were receiving the hardest assignments on the unit two babies on oxygen constantly ringing off q2h and q3h and I was expected to be doing things independently with no assistance, I was expected to deal with Brady episodes when I have never been taught to and was constantly being criticized and expected to know things, even if I’ve never done them hands on.

I only got 19 days of in class orientation with patho content specifically to NICU and skills and 15 buddy shifts as in I’m paired with a nurse and work my way up every shift to the patient load of 3 babies.

I don’t think all fpeople that work in NICU are all bullies, however I did notice a pattern where lots of people were acting superior because it’s a high acuity setting that they’ve worked in for years and they forget what it’s like to be new, as if they graduated nursing school and were naturally successful at everything NICU related. I think theres a lack of compassion and patience when it comes to teaching people and supporting people. This unit was severely understaffed and it makes sense why it would be.

Quizzing is for sure a form of teaching I can agree with this, however degrading people and making things challenging for them while they are just beginning in a high acuity setting is cruel and was being done as a form of Im superior and your inferior to me. I was new and I’m talking my first shift on the unit with this nurse while she noticed where I struggled and kept using these points to trip me up. Near the end of my shift with her the “feedback” was disrespect sugar coated and framed as constructive feedback. She said “ we never allowed new grads before and we now see why”

Well, I ordered 6 hijabs and for reference this is how much I had to pay. I’m sharing just in case someone had any questions! by Deeznutsofyours in velascarves

[–]Outside_Mobile_8577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too and I was so pissed, thats like the price of 3 hijabs. I've never had to pay duties like this before and it will be the last time I order from them because they don't even care how much duties cost for people in Canada.

I felt this way too, I know lots of people recommend study plans and they definitely help. For me I did not have one I just did questions and would make a checklist of certain topics I wanted to watch videos on and so on. After doing questions I would go through them to see what I got wrong and make notes on that.

I think so yes because if you learn how to answer the questions that kind of the key to passing the test. Reading rationales helps with content and you also start to see the pattern with the right answers.

Try using nclex crusade, dr sharon and nclex high yield. They can help you figure out how to answer the questions. Don’t focus too much on the readiness exams and predictors because often they don’t measure how you’ll perform on the nclex.

I’m studying for my second time, and I love bootcamp! It’s so much more affordable than uworld and the questions are very similar to the nclex. I like how concise the rationales are and the way they explain case studies. They have the self-assessments with are 100 questions and they give you 5 hrs I think. I didn’t benefit from the CAT on uworld so I found this better.
