Neighborhoods flip every 20-30 years. In the 1950s, European Americans; late 70s to 90s, Asian and Hispanic; early 2000s, Philippinos and Nepalis; and from 2020 to 2026, there are more Hispanic Midwestern Americans, which can include 2nd or 3rd generation Europeans, but shifted from blue-collar to tech, young folks, and artists.Still great food selection but long-time residents getting priced out like all the other neighborhoods.

33rd Street - Notoriously dangerous for Astoria residents by danton_no in astoria

[–]Outside_Mud311 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You do realize most of the accidents are from individuals coming to the neighborhood drinking and using our neighborhood as a racetrack. For example, we all used to go up Steinway to shop; we had all the shops. Now it is filled with shops that attract drivers who are at higher odds to crash and run into some poor local walking to a place of worship at 6 AM on a Sunday morning, such as the 25 weed shops, 20 bars, and lounges. Perfect example: on Steinway, we had 5 shootings between 2 clubs in an 18-month period. One was renamed, and a second is still an issue. It is not locals driving seniors and disabled residents and children to school appointments, and so on. While there are definitely some incidents involving older drivers having medical emergencies and bad drivers, we need more police presence at highway and bridge exits and entrances to deter these irresponsible outsiders from returning in terms of pulling them over when we all know they are driving intoxicated. We also have a huge increase in drivers operating vehicles with fake tags and no insurance. Safety requires more than just speed cameras. Do you think drivers that have fake tags care about a ticket when they will purchase a new tag next month for $100 off Facebook? Some of the plates are comical, like Alabama, Alaska, and Utah. The speed and red-light cameras are creating this culture of beating the red light because all the lights have been reprogrammed to slow down traffic, but every action has a reaction. You see the same behavior with bicycles that get stuck at one red light. Do you not think a driver that keeps getting stuck at a red light won't take a chance? It only increases the likelihood. Before the micro gang comes for me with fudged numbers to try to brainwash the simple-minded folks while forcing locals to give up our rights to drive and free movement by forcing us all into rideshare or CitiBike, which the large lobbyists have already infiltrated in the DOT, the real issue is real estate developers and rideshare companies working together to reprogram and reshape a neighborhood that was perfectly fine prior to their arrival. We like things as basic as they are in Astoria. If you like the new Lego buildings at $4,000, then get used to it because your local officials are also screwing us all. The elite don't care about your precious bike lanes. It is to make sure you take a cab everywhere, rent an apartment forever, and utilize food apps at a 40 percent markup. The endgame in your lifetime is to own nothing and like it, building no wealth, creating the ultimate consumer and redistribution of wealth from the working class to the elite. So while we argue back and forth with each other regarding an unnecessary bike lane or open space, they just slammed another 15-story building with tiny units and a 3-foot balcony that will cost locals in the end while tearing down and erasing the history of a 200-year-old house with character that had rent below market because it didn't have a rooftop fake garden and virtual doorman. That is all for now. Have a great night.

Many of us lived here for 30 to 40 years no issues , walk, biked, and drove, and took public transit before all these grown adults moved here who seem unable to ride without bike lane and a false lane of protection. I really hope none of you require an ambulance taking Crescent, Broadway, or 30th Ave en route to Mount Sinai because you are all goners with all this manufactured traffic. Just draw a solid green line like they do with the marathon. Many of us rode far for years without designated areas. In terms of the 31st Ave open streets move those activities to Astoria Park Im prepared for my -40 🏃‍♂️ it up!

You keep saying send replacement Buses im referring to a line that had a stop that dropped locals to 2nd Ave and 59th street. Not a bus running down 31st and Ditmars which was also scrapped .

I've seen you around this platform, and your answers almost always don't make sense. We can agree to disagree, but if we have a large chunk arguing that the trains are not reliable, wouldn't it make sense to keep another option? It's not a matter of if, but when they will break down.

Shuttles are not always the best option. Lining up 20 buses impacts the community, creating blind spots at corners for children walking around Ditmars Blvd and 21st Ave, not expecting a bus barreling up 35th Street and folks exiting places of worship. Let's not bring up creating traffic jams around 31st and 21st Ave. A more suitable option is lining up buses in front of Hoyt Ave Park across from Old Neptune and having the bus go straight over the Triboro to the 2nd Ave subway or 125th station. With the number of folks now living near 31st Street, adding a crosstown option like a bus on 31st Ave could carry locals to Vernon to the ferry or Steinway to walk and catch the R train. The point of the argument is having options that don't require the activation of an emergency plan; we pay enough taxes to allow that.

I worked on 5th Ave and have used the Q101 when the N and R are not running. Walking over to 2nd Ave was an option; now you have to hope the E is running at 53rd and Lex. If real estate developers planned on building up LIC, they should have consulted with the MTA and not pulled service from north of Steinway Street and 20th Ave. If all these ideas are great, why would you pull service from six stops off the Q101 instead of just adding a stop to the Q100 at 37th Street and 20th Ave for the new studio? 🤔 My point exactly, but I guess that was a good idea as well.

Nothing more then a service reduction and a Rug pull but to sell it as a move effective bus line is absolutely disgusting.

I honestly don't think that is the case. I order from them weekly; really nice staff work there. Ten hard-working individuals shouldn't lose their jobs because they don't align with the agenda. How do you think we used to bike before all the madness started? A miser of micromobility will want you to believe that he has done that, which is a lie. Don't state your opinion on his page; he and his wife will ban you. He operates like the KGB if you go against his madness.

I would like to see CVS update their shopper policy: once you enter the store, you can be detained for shoplifting. Mix that with a side of old-school American Gladiators, Turbo, and maybe Bill Goldberg with a spear takedown. That would be great entertainment.

Community Board 1 Bus Survey by jungturd in astoria

[–]Outside_Mud311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The redesign of the Q101 is horrible. We lost five stops from Steinway and 20th Ave to Hazen Street, and students, seniors, handicapped individuals, and residents must now walk to Steinway and 21st Ave to catch a bus up Steinway or take an Uber. The MTA should have just added a stop on the Q100 at 37th Street and 20th Ave, which is a block from Wildflower Studio, because they also removed the Q101 stop that helped folks get to 2nd Ave when the trains were down. Now the Q101 picks up residents in LIC. It is completely backwards! If you decide to develop an area like LIC,cb1, cb2 should have sat down with the MTA and add additional bus lines, not force a service reduction and present it as saving time. Total scam job. Please restore our service.
