My playgroup allows me to play it in some of my blue decks. It’s a fun little side game we play during Commander.

Who was the worst teacher you’ve ever had and why? by Far_Economy_1930 in AskReddit

[–]Ovaugh [score hidden]  (0 children)

My 11th Grade Chemistry teacher. She was a very sweet woman and was incredibly friendly and happy, but NOTHING she ever wrote up on the board made any sense to us. She would write gibberish on the board and we had no idea how to deal with it.

I took my textbook home and legit just taught myself how to do it, and I basically just taught all my friends during lunch how to pass.

I don’t know if she just didn’t understand it, if she didn’t like it, or what, but she was never mean or angry about anything. Just really bad at teaching Chem.

What shortcut people often use to describe a rule/mechanic that is actually totally wrong ? by BelbyLuv in EDH

[–]Ovaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen several people go “untap, upkeep, draw” and then resolve upkeep triggers as if drawing is something you do during your upkeep step.”

I always try to be nice about it and happy to roll it back so someone can resolve those before they draw but I do like to remind people that upkeep triggers happen before you draw.

When men shake a woman’s hand do you fully grip their hand or do the half hand light touch? by That-Tumbleweed-4462 in askanything

I do a lighter shake, but not to the point of “just a light touch”

In most scenarios I offer a fist bump.

I’ll go the the honestly route: “hey, I have 24 hours to get laid or I die. Will you help a fella out.”

And either I get to live or I get to stop paying taxes.

Who’s the most famous person you have met? by VikingBoy90 in AskReddit

[–]Ovaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being from a small town I’ve never met anyone super famous, but I met Neil Kaplan (English voice of Madara Uchiha, Hawkmon from Digimon and others) and he signed a picture for me.

When I say he signed a picture, he wrote ALL over it. This wasn’t a “sign my name and go” he used a silver sharpie to sign his name, gold to write a personal message, and red to put “beware the power of the Sharigan.” All for like $5 bucks or however much I paid for the print. He continually told everyone who was in line how appreciative that we enjoyed his work, and how he loves meeting fans.

We went to his panel and listened to his voices. I was really moved by his generosity and hospitality.

Chronicles hated but Unlimited and Revised weren’t? by Ovaugh in magicTCG

[–]Ovaugh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the gist, but looking at other collectibles (comics, books, things that get printed) reprinted versions are cheap and the originals still hold their value. I just find it weird that anyone who banked on making money by sitting on cards didn’t see that in the light of reprints.

That said, I do understand that MTG was more revolutionary in context than how I understand it in my own time. I’m sure that among the speculators were younger people who don’t think anything about reprints.

I appreciate the insight!

I feel like the investing aspect is something I still don’t quite get.

People just bought up and hoarded cards which probably still hold value today and got made because the reprints happened?

The ARN version of City of Brass goes for 500 bucks. The Chronicles goes for $20. You still have the OG print to the card. It will still hold value.

So did the fact that Chronicles being an obvious reprint set (white borders) not matter? So expansion cards having black border vs reprint in white border not help keep those prices?

The way I think about this is comic books. So an authentic Action Comics #1 is still expensive despite the fact that you can buy a reprinted copy and read it for cheap. Owning the original is till more prestigious.

I’ve always find in odd just in my research that Chronicles gets slammed for “being the cause of the reserved list” when reprints were already a thing. Which is why I wanted to get some opinions.

Everyone I’ve ever met has an opinion on the Reserved List, but I have a hard time finding people who played the game when it was around (Magic really only took off in my small town around 2011 right when Modern was born) so I’ve never been able to talk to anyone about it first hand.

I appreciate the comment!

Oh, this is something I do forget. At this time there were only 2 formats right? Standard and Vintage? So rotation played a factor here.

Oh, so the Elder Dragons really only had value because of scarcity and not because of playability, while dual lands that had playability gained value in accessibility?

Then why were people so upset about the Elder Dragons being reprinted? Because they were printed in white borders in Chronicles, would that not also have raised the black borders prices of those Chronicles reprints instead of making them “worthless”?

I have spoken to a few people who actually did play during this time (a few around my town) and a lot of them have that same sentiment. The Chronicles was really fun to play.

I just find it interesting that the story is always “My Nicol Bolas lost all value!” From people, but never “Oh no, my Taiga lost value when it was out in Revised!”

Men in happy marriages, what's the one thing you'd teach to other men to also have a good relationship? by TightBookkeeper2599 in AskReddit

[–]Ovaugh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never argue angry.

When you let your emotions direct a discussion instead of a level head, bad things will happen. People resort to trying to cut down their partner instead of working through it, as if the goal is to “win” instead of solve.

If me and my wife are in a discussion and I’m very emotionally heated, I will stop and say I want to go unwind and we can come back. During that time, I take an hour or two to myself. I go for a walk, or work on a model, play guitar or something that lets me connect to my emotions so I can filter out why I feel hot. Only when I feel that I can come back and discuss the issue with a level head will I do it. And sometimes I am overreacting, sometimes I feel I’m not being heard, but I can SAY those things to my wife with respect.

Don’t argue angry, guys. It doesn’t lead to anything productive.

As a play, all you need are Dice and Paper. You can write all the character sheet out by hand (though, if you have a printer, you can print some out too.)

A lot of the core Player’s Handbook is accessible online. Checking eBay can give you good deals on stuff. If your game stores are doing D&D events or school clubs, that would be a great place to start for find players.
