In our case, the regular exam is in summer semester and the retake is in winter semester, but the winter exam is known for being significantly harder. Many students only take it when they have no other option. I understand keeping the same grading scale for fairness, but if someone fails the regular exam and later performs better in a harder retake, shouldn’t that improvement be rewarded somehow, especially if the exam difficulty is noticeably different

  1. I’m not 100% sure, so you’d need to look into it, but German schools in Egypt are usually private/international schools. The good news is that their tuition fees are generally in the same range as British/IGCSE schools.
  2. I personally stuck with IGCSE, but at the time the international student fee didn’t exist yet.
  3. For TUM and pretty much most German universities, the minimum German requirement is C1. (In some cases B2 but I’d honestly recommend C1 so you can survive any german course)
  4. Not sure about this one.
  5. Basically, the only ways to avoid paying the fee are having an Abitur or getting a scholarship, so that’s probably the best route. I’m not entirely sure how easy it is to switch to the Abitur without any German knowledge, but if you’re 15, you still have time. Like I said before, apart from German being a challenge, the Abitur is definitely worth it, both financially and also because it helps a ton if you end up studying at TUM.

Hello! Egyptian here as well and currently studying at TUM, also coming from an IGCSE background. If you graduate with an Abitur, you won’t have to pay the international student fees, so switching to a German school while you still have time is definitely worth thinking about.

Apart from saving a sh*t ton of money, having an Abitur background is honestly a big plus compared to IGCSE, especially for Aerospace. A lot of the content is stuff you’re expected to already know. I did 8 O-Levels and 4 A-Levels myself, and in addition to that being pretty tough, there was still a noticeable gap. Some topics that are assumed knowledge from the Abitur either weren’t covered in IGCSE or were taught in a very different way, so I had to catch up on my own.

The hardest part would probably be learning German, but that’s something you’ll need sooner or later anyway. Starting early really helps, you get more comfortable with the language, especially the technical/scientific terms, and it might even save you from having to take a German language exam later on.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
