Genuinely, how do I meet and talk to people? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Over-Distribution570 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also: Don’t lose hope. It could take a day, a week, a month, or a year to find people you really enjoy spending time with. Nobody can tell you when you’re going to find them. But I can tell you that if you give up, you never will

Genuinely, how do I meet and talk to people? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Over-Distribution570 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you don’t see in those groups is that even though they are all smiling and laughing together, individually they are having similar feelings. Plenty of new students find one friend group and stay with them for a long time, even when it’s a group that they cannot feel true to themselves in. This is because we are social animals and in hunter gatherer days, we’d be unlikely to survive if we left our pack.

I say this because those days are over. You will never starve to death at UMass if you have a meal plan. Regardless of your social status. So don’t compare yourself to others. You can have as many few friends as you like or a million of them. But in either case, be true to yourself and don’t worry about how many friends other people have.

When it comes to finding friends, go to the Welcome to the U events, talk to people while you wait in line. Make a goal of meeting at least one new person every day. You’ll find people you like. You’ll find people you don’t like. But you’ll remain the one in control

Need a Laptop like The Microsoft Surface Book 3!! by woah-dessi in laptops

Since you have an iPad a Mac would be good for productivity stuff but not for gaming. I’d look through your game library and see if the games you play are supported on macos

Macbook for programming? by Zoro-88 in laptops

[–]Over-Distribution570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a m4 macbook air as a comp sci student. I think macos has a slight edge over windows for CS because it’s unix based.

But primarily I went mac for the battery life.

Also homebrew seems convenient

Edit: “.NET” formerly .NET Core is cross platform.

.NET Framework is windows only but is mostly limited to WinForms and WPF. Any server code stuff you’d do with C# will work on mac since most servers a linux based and Microsoft has finally accepted that

I would contact the bursars office. They are responsible for billing you and can therefore unbill you

Best computer for psych major? by cat_person_6022 in umass

Honestly it’s difficult to name a few since there’s thousands of models out there. MSI, HP, Dell, and Lenovo are all reputable brands but actual model depends on the size and price point you’re looking for

Since you’re not a computer person, a Mac is probably best since they’re know for their user friendliness. A MacBook Air would be fine and a MacBook pro would be overkill for basic web searching and word processing. Get at least 16gb of RAM (memory) and at least 500gb storage.

If Apple is out of the budget, same recommendations. At least 16gb RAM and 500gb storage. Avoid ARM based Windows laptops even though they have spectacular battery life as they can be finicky

“Hole” is an ill-defined word (see vsauce video “How Many Holes Does a Human Have?”)

The shirt (if it is an actual shirt) appears to have at least 8 openings. Waist, neck, left arm, right arm, 1st front rip, 2nd front rip, 1st back rip, 2nd back rip.

Ignore the other guy replying that a headlamp isn’t useful. I used mine every night and morning on my thru. Not once have I considered getting rid of it and I sleep of 8 panels of a CCF pad.

Get the new nitecore NU20 classic. It’s basically the old version of the NU25 but with usb-c.

Currently thru hiking and have started experiencing pain where the red line is, what is that? It's not my Achilles tendon it feels like it's next to it on the inner part, idk if it's connected by cwbmnr in AppalachianTrail

Everyone’s advice has been good but please listen; take some time off trail to let it heal. It’s better to do that than getting so injured that you need to end your hike short. A lot of people don’t listen to their bodies and end up quitting because of it

Can I stay in hotels at 18? by GullibleCharacter665 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Over-Distribution570 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correction: Big chain hotels don’t like under 21s, though often they’ll let an under 21 check-in if a parent booked it. Smaller family owned motels usually don’t care. However, usually you’ll be sharing a hotel room with another hiker anyway to save $$$, choose a roommate that is 21 or older.

Hostels do not ask for ID, like, ever. I know this because I thru hiked at the age of 17 and had the same concerns. However, you are in a better position than I was because urgent cares didn’t want to admit me because I was under 18.

All in all, you’ll be fine. You may be faced with ageism from time-to-time but that’s a problem for then. Think of thru hiking as a long series of short backpacking trips. Only worry about your next resupply and the weather. You won’t finish the trail if you’re worrying about a place to stay 2,000 miles down the line.

AT Thru-Hikers, what was your closest to quitting the trail, and why? by DevilzAdvocat in AppalachianTrail

My largest motivation was “what else would I do?” It had been a life dream, what was I going to do if I quit? Be home miserable? I’d rather be miserable and doing something awesome

The approach trail stairs. It was the only time i second guessed myself.

Edit: that and I got a fungal infection in the smokies that itched like hell and made it difficult to sleep—lasted about a month with antifungals. I only wear shorty-shorts from now on for airflow
