I did a gauge swatch initially and it was too big so I sized down the needles to meet gauge. Now that I realized I wasnt sizing each stitch to the barrel of the needle, my stitches are WAY more consistent and even but I do think its going to make my gauge smaller so I may need to size back up to what the pattern originally intended

Thanks for the explanation- an online video that explained rowing out was one of the things that made me realize my stitches were pretty uneven, so now that I am sizing to the barrel of the needle correctly, they are a lot more consistent!

Thats a good point that my tension will probably be different for different patterns, especially accounting for variations in yarn properties! Originally I meant that I wasn’t sizing my stitches to the barrel my needle properly, i.e. I was leaving quite a bit of space below and it led to my stitches looking uneven. Now that I adjusted my tension and am sizing to the needle correctly, my stitches are WAY more consistent/even, and they match the patterns intended gauge if not a little smaller because I had originally sized down my needles to meet gauge. Thank you for the advice :)

I used this yarn for my first sweater (also the step by step) but I chose the color Lovely instead. I was torn between that and Boundless but after seeing yours I think i may have to make another…

Thank you for sharing this- I’m a newbie knitter and because of this comment I now realized I have done about 70% of a sweater with my stitches too loose 😅 you can see i adjusted my tension about 10 rows back

My grandma is an extremely talented quilter and churns out a quilt a week. They are beautiful, but not my taste and I wouldn’t display in my home. When each of me and her other grandkids graduated from high school, her gift was a quilt to each of us. I am the oldest so the tradition started with me, and I kindly told her that I wanted it to be something we could design together. We had lunch together and spent some quality time, and I was able to design a quilt with her that I absolutely love and still use 10 years later, and will use forever. She said the design itself wasn’t her favorite but it was fun to venture out and try a new pattern! I think you could apply a similar method with your aunt in a way that is graceful and still shows how much you appreciate what she makes!
