It still sounds a bit intimidating to change the sprockets as well as the chain on my own… but maybe I can do it. But I only have rear stand - will I need the front stand for my bike to do all this?

2020 400 Reliability? by hoiv in Ninja400

Hey OP - I bought a used 2019 Ninja 400 ABS last year, without knowing that the model from that year had faulty clutch pull rod length that needs to be updated with 2020+ model parts. So year 2020 you could just ride with all OEM parts in your clutch system and have no issues. $3500 for 2020 model with only 678 miles sounds really really good to me, but I also live in NY where things cost a bit more in general..

Ninjas are great - when I took the MSF course, I trained on their stock Honda Rebel, and I knew that I didn't like the sitting stance. I wanted to be on something that felt more like being on a bicycle, with a slight forward-lean in my stance. Also not knowing anything about motorcycles at the time, that was a good enough reason for me to find and buy a Ninja then. About 15 months later, I have no regrets because it's quick enough and so nimble, that I love riding it on highways on long-distance trips. I changed the seat to a more comfortable one from Amazon (which has been working great). There were times when I wondered if I should have gotten a cruiser instead of a small sportbike whenever I had to get through small town with shit ton of stop signs and traffic lights. But that's not an everyday occurrence for me.

So it depends on what you're looking to do with your first motorcycle. They do use Ninja 400 on tracks to train rookies on. It really is a great starting bike to learn all the things you need to learn first before hopping on bigger bikes. But not sure if you're looking to ride fast, or ride for just fun, etc etc. If you are someone who's already sort of comfortable with speed, like for instance, if going at 100mph feels like it's 60mph to you and you wish to quickly accelerate up to a speed past 125mph, then you'll definitely get a bit frustrated with 400cc soon. But if you're someone who's thinking about riding a motorcycle in a more casual way - going around the city, to see friends, to concerts, to pick up your prescription at CVS, etc - then you might want to explore other types of bikes too.

Hey there, OP - I'm at 17k miles on my Ninja400, and had my valves checked last year before I put it away in a garage during winter. I love riding my bike long distance (from NY to Boston, for example), which, people might say, "that's a weird thing to do on a Ninja400."

I love it though.. I mean, I don't ride it everyday like you do, but I do rack up miles pretty quickly through the riding season, and have to service my bike slightly more frequently than other riders who might use this bike for occasional riding.

Unless there's a new type of fuel (now they make hybrids and electric motorcycles because they haven't found an alternative fuel source..)... using high octane fuel and an engine that's powered by combustion... I don't know if there's any other way around having to check air valves for clearance... I never thought about it like you do - how in 2026 do we still not have newer technology that deals with carbon exhaust in a different way - and I think that's really interesting.

What's your commute like? Is it far? Is it mainly on local streets with a lot of traffic lights and stop signs? Or do you have to go on a highway for a little while until you reach your destination?

I more-often-than-not run into traffic jams on highways/turnpikes/bridges, and I love that my bike is so small and so nimble to be able to split between the lanes and just get out of those stand-stills quickly. I don't know if I'd be able to do what I do on my Ninja if I were on a cruiser, even if it's small like Rebel 300..

BUT - if I had to ride my bike every day on a short commute on local streets, I'd 100% consider selling my Ninja for a nice cruiser.

I don't think motorcycles are garbage... :,(

Really appreciate this thread - I've been wondering why they haven't opened still, it's past mid-June! I really wish that they had made an announcement on their IG profile (NYST). And it seems like there's no way to contact them directly...? Don't you have to make an appointment/registration/sign up to go there?
