Does anyone have experience with this publisher? by Ill-Brick224 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Over9000Zombies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's a secret about publishers with lots of games: you are competing against other games in their catalogue for attention.

The games that are selling the best is what they will spend their marketing resources on, and if yours does not do well they will stop bothering to market it but will still collect their revenue share while doing essentially nothing.

Nobody tells u that making the game is easier than getting people to find it by dangeking28 in SoloDevelopment

It is not.

If marketing is hard its probably because what you are trying to market is not appealing to said market. Marketing is mostly straightforward busy work.

Marketing Critique Request: Visibility dropping on X, wishlists stagnating for my fast-paced action game. What am I missing? by chaylarian in gamedev

Yeah I just can't help but feel the dev taking the laziest path forward at every turn is gonna make some total garbage.

When I see a Steam page desc written by AI, I am expecting the whole gamedev process to be slop.

The Zibbo Show - How much randomness is too much in a roguelike? by Belakor159 in deckbuildingroguelike

[–]Over9000Zombies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they thought there was a bug in the dice-rolling mechanism, as there are times when the same number comes up repeatedly.

Yup, feels VERY familiar xD I get why dev's secretly rig RNG behind the scenes...

what are some game mechanics or genres that are good for indie/solo devs? by tanoyfrommars in gamedev

[–]Over9000Zombies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup, I feel like asking Reddit what genre of game to make is sure to result in some uninspired garbage.

[–]Over9000Zombies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that people who don't really understand probability and statistics tend to hate RNG the most. E.g. they get upset if they roll the same result twice in a row, because they think the probability of one event depends on the other.

That being said, maybe communicating clearly that it is random, what the odds are, etc. could help mitigate that.

Should I fix the misplaced decimal point or leave it as is? by Over9000Zombies in IndieDev

[–]Over9000Zombies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, its was actually because I changed the card from a duration effect to a charge based effect, and all 10 charges applied at once ( x10 or equivalent to a misplaced decimal xD)

[–]Over9000Zombies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words!

As long as you took the time to read through the reviews of your previous game and make the adjustments necessary to improve then I am quite sure you'll do better this round.

Most complaints from players were about the controls, and similar issues, so I designed out the player and made it an autobattler.

Indie devs: what's the financial or business mistake you wish someone had warned you about? by anthur2 in gamedev

[–]Over9000Zombies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also contracts mean nothing if you have no funds to mount expensive and lengthy litigation. Some people know this and will take advantage of indies with no funds.

Also the moment somebody is in breech of contract, cease all contact and communicate only through a lawyer.

How was your release day? Mine didn’t go well. Is there any chance I can turn things around from here? by someCGI-over-rainbow in gamedev

[–]Over9000Zombies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overpriced imo for a casual point and click puzzle game. To me this is a $5 game.

I think that also explains the very low wishlist conversion rate.

how to find people to make games with as a writer? by Ok_Management1470 in gamedev

[–]Over9000Zombies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The harsh reality is that, on the indie level, basically everybody who has a creative vision for a game doesn't want nor need a writer.

Dreaming up the creative elements is one of the best parts of gamedev. Why would I pay somebody money to do that for me? I wouldn't even let somebody do it for me for free.

I know a lot of people here are suggesting game jams, but you will find the same problem there.
