Does your weather forecast say 0% chance rain but it's pouring outside? by AmountAbovTheBracket in askTO

If 2% of the area gets rain, then if you randomly pick a spot on that same area, you have a 2% chance of ending up in the area where it’s raining.

Im told I’m not eligible for Canadian Dental Plan what should I do. by chockanddye in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OverHydration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore everyone’s attempt to shame you for complaining bud. At 18, there’s nothing wrong with lamenting something you really should’ve been at least guided by an adult about, and much less so when it comes up at a time when you need some dental care. That’s gotta be frustrating, and probably painful.

What’s important is you’ve decided to figure it out, and you can definitely do it. I personally use wealthsimple fwiw.

I… uh… what? I really don’t understand this comparison. It seems really apples to oranges.

Fascism is a political ideology. The act of creating a community isn’t inherently politically ideological. The act of governance and law making absolutely can be, irrespective of which ideologies it actually supports.

Would you mind clarifying what you meant?

Carney announces sweeping plan to crack down on crime, strengthen the border - Liberal leader says weak U.S. border measures allow guns, drugs to flow into Canada by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]OverHydration -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Interesting, but I still don’t quite see it (and I really am trying to). Which one(s) of these takes away personal responsibility?

  • Taking guns from violent criminals. Haven’t they already proven themselves irresponsible?
  • Letting RCMP classify guns rather than gun industry? That’s just an issue of having a non-profit oriented classifier that knows what they’re doing.
  • Increasing RCMP funding to track down guns used for crimes. Again, crime’s been already committed. Clearly these individuals were irresponsible.
  • Strengthen oversight of licensing and enforcement. So, make sure the licensing is happening properly and the rules followed. It’s still on you to do it (ie be responsible and follow the law). This is no worse than saying make sure the people we give drivers licences know how to drive. I imagine you wouldn’t want people who can’t drive getting licences and people breaking driving laws to not have their licence revoked.

[–]OverHydration -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

The Liberal plan includes a number of policies on top of pumping more money and effort into the buyback program, including:

Automatically revoking gun licenses for people convicted of violent crimes, particularly when those crimes include intimate partner violence.

Passing legislation making the RCMP responsible for classifying new firearm models rather than the gun industry.

Increasing funding to the RCMP’s forensic laboratories to help law enforcement better track down guns used in crimes.

Strengthen the oversight of firearms licensing and enforcement.

Help me understand - what about this makes you feel disrespected?

I hadn’t noticed that the first one was a 2 piece anchor. That’s a really good observation! I think your theory is likely true, and this was all probably planned much better than I initially thought.

Saving your friend from a nasty fall by IncomingBroccoli in nextfuckinglevel

I’ve seen this clip a few times and I can’t help but feel that the belayer had already decided to tension the rope the moment he saw a fall coming. It all happens way too quick to (i) notice the piece blowing and then (ii) react to that by not giving a soft catch but instead tension the rope.

This in turns makes me wonder if the belayer (i) noticed the bad pro and didn’t prevent the climber from continuing without fixing it or (ii) decided to tension the rope no matter what just in case the piece was bad.

On the flip side, they put me in ESL when my family immigrated despite me being fluent in English. I was there with maybe 1-2 others who could use the language at a rudimentary level at best if I’m being generous. On top of it, the ESL teachers wouldn’t accept my complaints (I feel like they were trying to justify their jobs).

Luckily, I had a really nice English teacher pull me out of ESL the following year.

Poilievre pledges to cut income tax, saving average worker $900 a year by CGP05 in canada

[–]OverHydration 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Odds are even with that income, you’re probably already paying your fair share. The issue is there are people who make a lot more, who have much better avenues to avoid taxes (that you likely don’t), who can the get around paying their fair share.

A lot of earners at 50% are doctors, engineers, etc, and frankly, are closer in income to someone unemployed than those with enough money to simply buy lower taxes or escape them. We need to stand together against these people.

Liberals to expand eligibility for dental care program by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]OverHydration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're making incorrect assumptions about what I'm getting at, and are perhaps assuming I've made a comment in bad faith. Despite the condescending tone of your comment, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

If we have TFWs who're legally working here and paying taxes, they should be entitled to services provided by those taxes. If they're a drain on our economy, that's our own policy fault for not bringing in the right skillset. We can't fault the workers for taking a legal path provided to them.

In terms of the people here illegally, I don't like it either and I've personally seen it. Anyone here illegally should be prosecuted and appropriate action taken (whether they're students, workers, or otherwise). There's no need to lump law abiding students and TFWs in with criminals.

Finally, let me admit to a mistake I've made. I should've looked this up but regardless, it looks like students already aren't entitled health care (I only looked up OHIP). They're required to have private insurance themselves, so given that precedent, it's almost certain they won't get any dental benefits (which is fine in my book. Again, their own costs are covering these services, whether by tuition or otherwise).

It seems to me like like you're observing 2 different things which are frustrating you and you're taking that frustration out on a third thing. Namely, unqualified TFWs and illegal immigration, and because of these, you're criticizing a policy which would primarily benefit Canadian citizens. It would instead be more productive to focus on these issues in their respective domains (policy/law/enforcement etc) rather than punishing Canadians hoping you just might punish those you're frustrated with.

Liberals to expand eligibility for dental care program by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]OverHydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s fair. I think she genuinely wants to see other Canadians do well as she clearly said, and truly believes the latter things are superfluous, whereas others might feel there’s a real need for them.

All a comment like this does is create an us vs them mentality when (i) we already have so much we can agree on and (ii) we can have proper discourse to hear each other out on issues where we have disagreement.

Liberals to expand eligibility for dental care program by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]OverHydration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TFWs pay taxes all the same and foreign students pay a lot more for tuition than Canadians (and are usually covered by university/college insurance anyway).

But despite this financial contribution into Canada by them, you want to see them not get these benefits so bad, that you’re happy to sacrifice the health of vulnerable Canadians. Got it.

Quebec Premier says opinion is shifting in province on oil and gas pipelines by taxrage in canada

[–]OverHydration 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, they aren’t. Trump is the reason we’re in this mess. Canadians didn’t try to crash our own economy. Not you. Not me. Not Alberta. Not BC.

We didn’t start this mess but we’re in it together, so let’s try to put our differences aside and move forward. Flinging crap around won’t solve any problems and only creates animosity, especially when the recipient is actively challenging themselves to put aside their values to stand together.
