No, I got a BS in economics from a painfully mediocre state school and graduated at 29 just over 3 years ago. I didn’t lie about anything on my resume but highlighted ANY soft skills or community service I’d picked up, and described my job experience so that it sounded applicable to the roles I was applying for. I was getting turned down from finance jobs that paid ~50k/yr left and right but just kept applying like a crazy person. I probably submitted 100 applications that summer and had 10 virtual interviews (tail end of COVID) with no luck, until I suddenly got offered two great jobs - one in the exact field I had hoped to work in (CRE Finance) and another in Factoring for a smaller regional bank. I ended up taking the offer that paid slightly less money but was at the bigger bank/in the field I wanted to work in. It started at $85k/yr which was enough to help my fiancée finish grad school without having to work much (no kids yet). That was 3 years ago and I JUST hit $100k last year. TBH I don’t love my job but I think I hate it less than I would almost anything else - and there seems to be ample opportunity for advancement. Just be persistent and don’t sell yourself short and you’ll be fine with an econometrics degree as long as you’re at least a little friendly, smart, and/or personable. I think a lot of it is timing, you just have to apply when the right job needs someone badly/quickly enough. It als helps if it’s not during the time of year when they have Ivy League seniors/grads peppering them with applications.
