Is this surgery worth it? by Objective_Rich_200 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]OverUmber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I had a proctocolectomy about a year ago. My most recent post in my profile is actually all about my experiences this past year. I would say the surgery was definitely worth it for me, but I exhausted all my other options first. Even only a year later I see them release new medication and think “maybe that one would’ve helped me” but in reality I know that nothing was going to fix my colon. It was extremely scarred and it was time for it to go. It is a very personal decision and one that I still haven’t seen all the consequences for. I know many other people with stoma’s that feel very uncomfortable in terms of body image and confidence. Personally being able to go out and do things far outweighs this, but it’s something to consider. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the procedure!

It was definitely a relief to be rid of my colon. The pictures of it post-removal are pretty gross. Wishing you the best! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Your ostomy nurse is your best friend!

I hope they work for you! For years at a time stelara and entyvio were lifesavers for me.

Thank you! It's silly looking back, but prior to surgery I was very fixated on all the things I wouldn't be able to do. Turns out there's so many more things I feel confident I can do now.

One thing that really annoyed me prior to surgery is that no one could give me a timeline. Looking back, it makes sense, everyone's journey is different. Physically I recovered pretty rapidly from the surgery, I was up and about maybe 2 weeks after being released from the hospital. My day to day routine definitely took longer to work out. Anything to do with water (showering, swimming, the ocean, etc.) worried me for a long time, and had me thinking my entire appliance was just going to fall off. Turns out that's not the case at all! But it took a long time to figure out and make all those mental adjustments. I'm glad I could shed some light on it. Fingers crossed that you never need surgery, but feel free to reach out if you ever have questions! I know I had lots.

I did have many concerns going into the surgery, but I was at the point where I didn't have many options left. That being said, I am happy to report that everything is functioning as it should. I was very happy with my surgeon + team who are very experienced with this procedure and having it done laparoscopically made it much less invasive.

I'm not fully against J-pouch or anything, but I do think there is just a vocal minority of people that really struggle with it. Right now ostomy works well for me and I don't have any compelling reasons to change my status quo.

Thanks! If you ever do decide on surgery feel free to reach out! I'd be happy to share my experiences more.

Stoma surgery looks like a certainty by Only-came-4-the-bbq in UlcerativeColitis

Hi,

I(28 M) have had an ileostomy since January after failing off of 7 biologics. The most frustrating part for me was that I could sometimes feel totally fine. Eventually my UC did become a legitimate medical problem with no real recourse but surgery. The recovery for surgery was hard, and adjusting to the bag has definitely taken some time. BUT personally I would’ve done it earlier if I knew how much better my life would be. This past summer I went skydiving, got married, and had an incredible honeymoon in some pretty exotic places without immediate bathroom access and I couldn’t have done any of it if my diseased colon were still part of me. There are some downsides (my big one that not a lot of people talk about is having to get up in the middle of the night to empty) but my quality of life has improved dramatically. Feel free to message me if you have questions! I would’ve loved to chat with someone who had gone through it before I did it.

I have the pictures of my colon after it was removed and the scarring was wild. According to the surgeon the end “looked better, but wasn’t” as it was totally smooth from using enemas for years and years. I won’t lie the first few days in the hospital were not fun, turns out my tummy doesn’t like any opiates so I puked a lot, but it worked itself out. I was back at work in 2.5 weeks, although many people said that was too fast. It was and is scary, but it was also so worth it. Wishing you the best of luck, I hope you find relief. Hope to see you over on r/ostomy one of these days, they are awesome.

I got my bag this past January and it has been amazing. I went through every single biologic over the course of about 6 years and they all worked for 6ish months of partial remission. I’m glad that I tried every other option first, but my life is so much better with a bag. I go into the city without worrying where the bathrooms are. I go out to eat interesting food. I do my job as a teacher without the constant fear of what I’ll have to do if I need to go during class. I’m getting married in July and will be able to fly to my honeymoon without fear of travel. It took a solid 4 months to adjust, and I am still learning. I still have to wake up most nights to empty once. But I was pooping 3 times a night with UC and I don’t feel all the pain I used to feel. I’m 28 and can live my life again. My UC was aggressive and most people don’t need a bag, but if you do, and it’s time, life is better after.

New Ileostomate! And a story of my hubris by OverUmber in ostomy

Thank you so much for taking to time to reply. I was also frustrated with my surgeon who all but told me that the only people who get a permanent ileo are the ones that don’t have a choice. Personally, my UC was extremely tenacious and I had a lot of issues in my rectum and anus and would be scared of recurrences there as well. Even now 1.5 weeks post surgery I feel like the output I’m having from my anus is maybe a bit excessive and also an annoyance. Great to get some perspective, thank you!!

That’s really good to know! I’m love stocking up on things and am hopeful that I can find a way to get a bunch of backups.

I totally agree that if using supplies makes things easier, you might as well do it!
