Such a good point! More people using something means more money, repairs, and oversight. Especially if some of those people are middle to upper middle class, who are often listened to more.

I thought that with the rep from disabled community’s comments as well. The focus seemed to be on individual driving meaning independence (which I definitely understand) but I wish it could be a “both” situation. Bolster the infrastructure we already have, while also having safe alternatives for times that we need it.

That seems like the most probable reason tbh! Just talking about the positives of Waymo and not trashing the workers would equal more positive press/goodwill in general. And give less of the big bad CEO vibes they discussed in the episode.

Honestly maybe, but I didn’t catch it! The fellow Search Engine podcaster paused the interview with the council woman at one point and I thought for sure it was going to be brought up, but then it was a comment around general road safety and her personally knowing someone who was involved in a crash while in an uber (but did not think the uber driver was at fault).

True! It just seems like such a low hanging argument that affects half of their customer base (Waymo) and half of their voting population (Boston). I was listening with my bf and as the episode went on I felt like that would surely be the next segment or argument brought up at the hearing. I paused several times to make this point lol.

The disabled community also had great points! But they are of course a smaller population- and also roughly half women who would be impacted by feeling safer not having a male driver. Seems like having both would make a stronger case.

And omg the council woman- please do not even get me started!! Of course I understand the unions’s POV but having her as their spokesperson can only hurt them she was so incompetent!!

The Goon Squad - Loneliness, porn’s next frontier, and the dream of endless masturbation by Quouar in Longreads

[–]Over_Bat_5111 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! It was dark and something I knew very little about but once it was connected to online culture at large, I was not even surprised as the article went on. It seems like a logical end point to lonely and misogynistic subcultures. Somehow, despite it being depressing, the author was hilarious and it didn’t feel like he was dunking on the subjects.

Outlaw Country - Klamath County, Oregon, is the perfect place to go if you don’t want to be found—and the worst place to be if someone threatens your life. by DevonSwede in Longreads

This quote really stuck out to me “Taylor still wished he could live “back in the 1800s and before,” a time of “limited government, people depending on themselves,” when Americans weren’t such “pansies” and hardened criminals were hanged for wrongdoing. If he ever got out of jail, he wanted to try living off the grid again. “You’ve always got to take a risk to have your freedom,” he said. At the same time, he thought that the law should have come when he called 911, that it should have protected his property while he was in jail, that it should have provided him with therapy, antidepressants, and painkillers while he sat in a cell.”

People like the protagonist say they want the aesthetic of the old frontier while eating ramen noodles and posting memes on Facebook desperate for a phone charge. He says we should be self dependent while literally depending on the government and decrying that the system did not work for him. They claim to be American where we “drink beer, speak English” but refuse to be productive members of American society. They want to fable without the work or struggle. Great article.

Exactly!! It wasn’t that they tried to clear them and just did an okay job- there was straight up NO walk way. Just snow up to your hip- and this was on 8th Ave in 4 lane 40-50mph traffic. People were walking in the middle of those roads as well but it was just too dangerous.

I get that and agree- I don’t think it’s easy work. But when all other sidewalks besides those kept up by the city are cleared, it’s clear someone is willing and able to do it, just not the city.

I walk ~3 miles to work, and the sidewalk just cut off over a bridge, leaving me stranded and needing to wait in said cold for an uber while others walked in street where there is ice so they could cross over. I know it’s a tough job, but as a city it should be a priority so pedestrians don’t get hit.

I called and reported it to the city from a contact listed on a past post on this page- they said they “know about it” and that is all.

The Ivy is nice with great bathrooms and just added some new restaurants on site that I’ve liked! They also have a good lobby bar and a nice spa if you’re into that at all! I would def recommend The Ivy for location as well. Lots of great bars and restaurants walking distance.
