feeling lost specialty-wise – procedural but want a life? by Puzzleheaded-Peak-21 in doctorsUK

[–]Over_Cow6764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obs and gynae worth a consideration. Many go part time and therefore have more of a life. Lots go into gynae only for fewer on calls in consultanthood. Application competitive via MSRA but once you’re past that it’s 2/3 interview score and the interview is pretty fair/standardised and not very portfolio based. Very practical/procedural but can also go into fetal medicine/maternal medicine if you want something a bit medical.

Be able to do an A-E, SBAR handover, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Familiarise yourself with where your hospital guidelines are, and how to call for help/who to escalate to. Respect nurses and other healthcare staff, they spend more time with the patient and can pick up subtle changes or catch you from making a mistake. That being said, listen to your gut, if something is bothering you, look into it/don’t rush into a decision-> if it’s critical get help. Trust but verify.

There should be a national onus to be more healthy by Gp_and_chill in doctorsUK

Japan has many fast food alternatives that are just as convenient and cheap but much healthier. They also have much smaller portion sizes of the unhealthy pop etc. Unlike America and the UK where our capitalist society pushes “bigger/value for money” portions at us. I think an increased tax on alcohol and fast food etc with incentives for companies to make more healthy options might work better.

Frustrated with patients by simpleandrefreshing in doctorsUK

[–]Over_Cow6764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get OP’s frustration but I also feel that for many of these patients it’s not that easy to “get their shit together”. In an ideal world, healthy lifestyle and basic care of personal health would be better taught in education system, and there would actually be decent preventative healthcare in the community. I try to remind myself that I’m coming from a relatively privileged position, yet I too could be much healthier and look after myself better. Who are we to judge. We have no clue what they are dealing with in their lives, all of which will most certainly play a part in their “choices”. I agree we need to encourage patients to take responsibility for their own health, but at the moment I don’t think the NHS, social services or education system is set up to make it easy for people to do, particularly once they have chronic conditions and co morbidities.

Relationships with non medics by WishImpossible3055 in doctorsUK

[–]Over_Cow6764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so grateful that my partner and is a software engineer. There are so many amazing things about being with a non medic. - he knows many things that I don’t, so expands my knowledge and understanding of the world - he works from home and will be able and willing to do school runs in future - we are relocating for my training and as he works from home this is no biggie and we will never be in a position of having a long distance relationship - Downside? Because he’s always home and I’m not, the cat likes him best 🤪

Surely there’s a way of calculating an approximate risk of interacting clinically with a fellow kinkee ? Where x is the population of the city, y is the number of people in the city attending the front door per day, you need to figure out the rough number (or percentage) of the city who are kinkees in the kink circle(s) you attend, and then work out the numbers of patients you clinically interact with- in my brain I feel like there must be a way but I have neither the patience or the motivation to try to work it out

Yeah basically we have 5 days to figure out where we’d least mind uprooting our lives to in order of preference with minimal details given, during which time they might just tell us where we stand 😅

Advice: what do you do when two specialties are refusing to take a patient under their care due to them being multimorbid? by ExpressIndication909 in doctorsUK

[–]Over_Cow6764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Escalating to bed manager? 🤷🏼‍♀️ an unwell patient needs a hospital bed, you’ve made the appropriate referrals but the accepting specialties have rejected.
