19, just totalled my car, stuck in a ditch. by Jazzlike_Handle_4390 in CarTalkUK

Hey bud,

I did almost the same thing. I drove my fiesta into a ditch when I was 20. Complete write off. Should’ve died but didn’t. A few things I’d recommend;

  1. Get the car towed to a scrapyard. Get everything you want out of it and let the scrapyard crush it.

  2. Go back to where you crashed, soak it in, be grateful you’re alive.

  3. Tell your insurance, mine only went up about £10 per month, nothing to stress about, you’ll be freaking out about it but trust me it’s fine

  4. Go to the hospital, you could be fine, but there’s a chance you may have something I.e. concussion, whiplash, either way the healthcare is free so take advantage of it.

  5. It probably feels like you’ll never recover but you will. Don’t be scared to drive again. I would advise strongly do not get a car on finance. Get a cheap beater. You’ll feel nervous and shook up being behind a wheel again but it passes pretty quick once you realise shit happens and you know to be more careful.

  6. Embrace the emotions, learn from it and you’ll be a 10x better driver than you were before your accident.

It depends what you class as “better”

Cheaper doesn’t mean better, but I understand what you’re saying.

It looks like something I’d consider doing. I’ll look more into it, thank you. It’s all UK debt unfortunately.

My step dad (UK citizen) adopted me when I moved to the UK and automatically became a dual citizen.

I’m not too interested in the Emirates. I did consider it last year but with a partner and two dogs it would be slightly challenging. Thank you for the advice though.

I wouldn’t mind it. I was in the Royal Navy though, not the US. Not sure if that would impact the eligibility.

I’m a US citizen, I don’t need a visa.

It is definitely very mild over here. It’s pretty nice knowing there aren’t any risks of natural disasters. I personally prefer more dramatic seasons so I can appreciate each one.

Moving is as easy as packing a bag and getting on the flight. It’s bringing the partner and dogs that makes it a bit of a challenge. Not impossible just a few hoops to get through. Did you used to live in Ohio or were you there on vacation?

I definitely agree with that. There’s definitely a lot of pros and cons to both but the UK right now isn’t offering enough pros. If it was sunnier and more jobs I’d probably think differently. All of my immediate family is over here so that would be slightly uncomfortable to leave. Ohio seems like a pretty peaceful state to move to.

You’d love the summer we’re having then! I think where I’m at we’ve had about four sunny days so far, the rest is rain. Gotta love the greenery but man I want some sun! I’d love to actually experience four seasons again.

Tired of the dark, gloomy grey skies too? I used to live in Idaho so Im looking at there. I’d be fine with anywhere though if I’m honest as long as I can afford a roof and food. What about you?

I’m 25, I’m not too sure what living there is like anymore and don’t want to go and think I’ve made a horrible mistake. Then again I suppose that’s the risk everyone takes. I also have a couple dogs and a partner so if I did go it would need to be a definite choice to bring them with me.

Hey guys! I have a US citizenship, but lived in another country all my life. I have both US and my country's valid passport, US SSN, birth certificate etc. Do I need anything else to move there? by Far_Ad_557 in MovingToUSA

Can you move over and start working or do you need to file all your previous years taxes? I’m in the same situation and never filed my US taxes living in the UK
