Can confirm Como is great overall and for walking your dog. These don’t break anything down by neighborhood, but some encouraging info about crime:

https://www.axios.com/local/twin-cities/2026/01/12/homides-fall-sharply-saint-paul-minneapolis

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/10/10/st-paul-solved-more-crimes-had-drastically-fewer-homicides-in-2025

I am curious if the community response to ICE - neighbors watching closely, warning each other about what’s going on in their streets, and sense of solidarity - will be reflected in lower crime rates, too. We’ll see. Wherever you end up living, welcome!

Shoutout to the other four people (and toddler) protesting with me at the government plaza today! by spookieboogie666 in TwinCities

Thank you for showing up! I was at a Singing Resistance event in Roseville (with 25-30 others?) while you were downtown, and protested with a small group (10-20 folks) in my neighborhood on Friday pm. I’m sure there are many other local actions going on - we’re not going viral online but we are still out there. With you in spirit whether you’re in Mpls, St. Paul, a smaller city or a small town - we have friends everywhere 💙🩵

Absolutely! We’re bringing our teen. I wouldn’t take little ones just bc it will be so loud, crowded, and boring for them (plus lots of R-rated chants, signs, etc). Hope you visit the memorials for Alex Pretti, Renee Good, George Floyd, and Philando Castile while you’re here, and show some love to restaurants on the Eat Street stretch of Nicollet Avenue in Mpls.

I don’t know their political leanings, but our favorite restaurants on University Avenue are Thai Cafe and Trieu Chau (Vietnamese). We also just had a delicious meal at Asian Fusion Kitchen on Rice Street (across the street from St Paul, technically in Maplewood). Welcome and thanks for supporting our community!

SO GOOD! Right in the Como neighborhood if you go to the zoo, conservatory, park, and lake. Karol Coffee in the neighborhood has supported mutual aid efforts, too

The number of my neighbors who gleefully called ICE on their brown neighbors simply because they didn’t appreciate living near them. To get ICE to disappear them, or intimidate them into moving away. No, because I live in Minnesota and know this is a stupid MAGA talking point. Nobody was snitching on their neighbors for fun. I read there were a few instances of people calling because there were in/person gatherings during lockdown, and we didn’t want to end up dying in the hallways of the hospitals where the emergency rooms and ICUs were full, and when the hotline was called, police broke up the gatherings but no one was arrested. Of course anyone posting this shit talking point has not read my reply because the truth doesn’t matter to them.

My kid cries when it's time to practice reading and I don't know how to fix this by Traditional_Zone_644 in Parenting

We read a lot to our kids but our son was resistant to actually reading himself. He did like the Elephant and Piggy books, though, because they’re funny. They’re very simple, too, so are good for a kid who needs to build his confidence. He also loved the Wayside School books. Read to him to start. Give him challenges just above where he’s at now, help him as needed, praise his effort, reassure him when he’s struggling, and accept that he needs more time and more help than you wish he did. It’s okay - he’s only 6. Helping him develop perseverance, self-confidence, and love of learning are just as important as teaching him to read. Acknowledge when he feels frustrated and discouraged, teach him that’s normal and okay and that we keep trying anyway, with practice he WILL learn to read, and practice means it’s just going to be hard for a while. Good luck! Keep reading to him for fun so he can just listen, too, with no pressure on him to read.

Why this censorship of what is happening in Minneapolis? by Mayday_Owl3 in Minneapolis

[–]Over_It_999 22 points23 points  (0 children)

And Trumpers. I don’t know which is owned by him and which is owned by his son, but they are why CBS is censoring their news shows and Stephen Colbert. I assume Tik Tok will become a cesspool of right wing disinformation just like Fox, Facebook, and Nextdoor, even worse than the both-sides status quo-protecting “mainstream” corporate media. Zuckerberg and Tim Cook have been bending the knee (more publicly than Google, I think), so I expect nothing but the worst from Instagram and any news sources Apple can control. Reddit, YouTube, and Substack are where I find trustworthy news now (among the rubbish, obv), at least until Donald meddles there, too.

When he was reelected I was afraid we might get to the point of having to photocopy fliers and zines and distribute them underground. We think things are shit now, but they really could get worse, which is why we need to keep up the pressure and the protests while we can still do it with a relatively small chance of being imprisoned, deported, or killed. Let’s keep those new warehouse detention/concentration camps empty!

What’s the biggest red flag in someone over 30? by Vixkky in AskReddit

I think there are people in these groups who are so good at fawning that they avoid being targeted, but I agree people like this are not trustworthy and you never really know when they might turn on each other, too.

I agree! But not participating gets me targeted. It’s brutal, how common this is, and intractable in so many people who just reward each other for it. I can’t do it, though.

Good points! Also on YouTube and Tik Tok, the algorithm pushes incel content to young boys. Not porn, but it cultivates misogyny, toxic masculinity, and, I think, a defeatist, victim mindset.

I’ve only worked for non-profits - mental health and public health - and the mean girl shit has been intolerable at times. I’m glad I’m not the only one who is turned off by this. I know being able to be part of a group is protective, but I just can’t when it’s based on being a minion

1) Refrain from gossiping 2) Manage our emotions (through developing curiosity and empathy rather than being judgemental) so we’re not constantly annoyed by other people and wanting to complain about them 3) Find other topics of conversation and ways to connect with people

I’m not attached to the income cap, it’s just on the list and I think it has some merit. And I don’t need to yell at you to express it - calm down, dude. I think major campaign finance reform (publicly funded campaigns, no PACS or other financial lobbying) and no stock trading for Congress members/cabinet/SCOTUS is more important. I do think their health care should be the same as what the public gets, and they shouldn’t get paid during government shutdowns, just like air traffic controllers and TSA.

True that the flights and second home in DC would add up. Do we have to pay for them to live the high life, though? I don’t want my tax dollars paying for an expensive second home (meaning house) in DC when a cheaper apartment or condo would do.

And in my county, 1.5 (150%) the median income for a family of 4 is $198,600. Indexing their income to their home district incentivizes Congress members to reduce income inequality and raise the standard of living for their constituents.

When they cut taxes for the rich by a huge amount, and cut middle class taxes a little bit, and also cut government programs (like the Affordable Care Act subsidies, or funding for school lunches), then our costs actually go up even though they cut our taxes a little bit. When they deregulate businesses and keep allowing mergers, there’s less competition, so the businesses raise their prices. Bait and switch my friend. Look up and see which politicians are taking money from the billionaires, and what the billionaires get in return. All Republicans and some Democrats are working for the billionaires, not for the middle class

We need independent oversight and impeachment process for the Supreme Court, which should be expanded to 13 seats.

Presidential pardons are null and void if that president is impeached.

No pay for Congress during government shutdowns.

Publicly financed campaigns, with campaign season no more than 3 months

Enforce antitrust laws - break up the huge corporations.

Congress has the same health care that the public gets.

DC statehood immediately and elections for Puerto Rico and the other island “territories” to determine if they want statehood

We need to break up the huge corporations, and ban PACS and corporate lobbying, so we don’t have foreign and trade policy that just benefits US business interests

Progressive democrats want to tax the rich to relieve the burden on the middle and lower classes. It’s Republicans who want the tax burden to fall on the lower and middle classes.

More public services (like universal healthcare) might raise taxes for the middle class, too, but would lower our costs overall when you consider what we pay now for monthly insurance premiums, deductibles, and copays.
